Martha Taylor Obituary

Martha Taylor

March 22, 1918 - July 16, 2024

Fort Worth, Texas - Martha Corrine Collins Taylor, 106, passed away July 16, 2024, at her home in Trinity Terrace.

Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 26, 2024, in Independence Chapel at Greenwood.

Martha was born in 1918 in Lovelady, Texas, to Reba Rich Collins and William Hayne Collins. She experienced an idyllic small-town childhood in the piney woods of East Texas. After attending Baylor University, she graduated in 1938 from the University of Texas at Austin.

Upon graduation, she taught school in Crockett where she met and married Jesse Peyton Taylor from San Marcos. Three children later, they settled in Fort Worth where she taught 9th grade English at McLean Junior High and Arlington Heights High School. Throughout her retirement years, many of her former students acclaimed her as one of their most beloved and best teachers.

She was active in the Woman's Club of Fort Worth and Tanglewood Garden Club. She and Jesse loved to dance and were members of the Carousel, Farando, and Dinner Dance Clubs. She was an avid bridge player and played the piano by ear. As a resident of Trinity Terrace, piano music could often be heard coming from her apartment and she was frequently invited to play for the residents. In March, Martha celebrated her 106th birthday in grand style singing with the Trinity Terrace residents' Ukulele Band.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Jesse; daughter-in law, Tana Zipperian Taylor; and special friend, Paul Stevens.

She is survived by her daughter, Martha Ann Taylor Jones and husband, Jimmy of Houston; son, Dr. Bill Taylor and wife, Wendy of Austin; son, James Taylor and wife, Jerry of Fort Worth; nephew, Charles Ripley of Dallas; grandchildren, Troy Jones (Kerry), Todd Jones (Erin), Peyton Jones (Rosie) of Houston, Colin Jones (Jenny) of Scottsdale, Dr. Christy Taylor Risinger (Matt), Peyton Taylor (Emily) of Austin, Leigh Taylor Bornitz (Michael), Blair Taylor Walker (John) of Fort Worth; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Salvation Army, Broadway Baptist Church or a charity of your choice.

Mrs. Taylor was one of the best teachers I ever had. She made her English class interesting and enjoyable when I was attending McLean JHS in 1961/'62. The last time I saw her was in the fall of 1962, when she and her son James visited me when I lived on Covert Ave. and was in the process of getting my amateur radio station set up. At that time James was considering getting a "Ham Radio" license.

Mrs. Taylor was a truly gracious woman! My condolences to the Taylor family on their loss. I've often thought of Mrs. Taylor over the years and how much I appreciated being in her English class.

Martha was the sweetest person. She was so good to my mother, Ruby McMaster, when she lived next door to her on Preston Hollow Rd.
