Mary Leta Davis

Fort Worth, Texas - Mary Leta Davis of Fort Worth was born February 17, 1940, in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of the late Bertus Waugh Davis and Azlee Gertrude Flewharty Davis of Nelta and the sister of Jerry Bert Davis of Dallas.

Ms. Davis died on March 25, 2026, in Fort Worth, Texas.

She was a descendant of several early Hopkins County settlers, including Eldridge Hopkins for whom the county is named. Her great-grandfather was Samuel Smith, an early Tarrant/Hopkins County sheriff, and her great-great-grandfather was Z.G. Matthews, an early Tarrant/Hopkins County Clerk.

Ms. Davis grew up in Nelta and graduated from Sulphur Bluff High School. She was a graduate of The University of New Mexico and obtained a master's degree from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M Commerce). She was a journalist, working at Penton Media, Houston; Tyler Morning Telegraph, Tyler; and News-Telegram, Sulphur Springs. After retiring from journalism, she was a part-time English instructor at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth and Lone Star College in Houston.

She was a member of the Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Sulphur Springs Kiwanis Club, Houston American Association of University Women and Fort Worth Newcomers Club. She was an Episcopalian.

She was preceded in death by her niece, Melanie Ann Davis.

Survivors include a son, Jason Hopkins Grant of Houston, a daughter Patricia Grant Livergood and husband Michael, of Fort Worth; four grandchildren, Duncan Grant, Alex Grant, Madeline Defranco and Grant Livergood, her brother and wife, Patricia St. Clair Davis, a nephew, Richard Davis, great niece Lindsey Miller and great nephews, Cole Davis and Chris Davis. Two great-granddaughters, Teagan Livergood and Elliot Defranco.

No services are scheduled. Donations may be made to the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, scholarship support (https://innovationsinmind.utmb.edu/; American Heart Association (www.heart.org) or the American Diabetes Association(www.diabetes.org)
