Happy Birthday Brother!
(Yesterday the 28th)
I didn't get a chance to write you yesterday because I drove to Grapevine and back home after work to see you and the family and wish you a Happy Birthday.
Everything looks great! They did a really good job. I know you would like the way it turned out.
Not a day goes by that I don't miss or think of you. It's hard for everybody..but we know you would want us to be happy and stay strong.
You’re getting closer to being a new uncle to my baby boy! I'm so anxious to tell him about you and what a great man you were.
Stay by our sides and continue to watch over us, as I know you do. I'll keep talking to you in prayer.
I hope you blew out 27 bright candles!

Matt,
There isn't a day that goes by, where I am not reminded or think of you and all the amazing things that we did and shared together.
I miss you more than you can imagine..but I know that God has a plan for you and all of us.
We are still setting up a more permanent website to place messages, pictures, your artwork, maybe soundtracks we liked etc etc. at www.MATTHEWERTEL.COM
Mark, is going to use his expertise and all the information we can give him...to hopefully develop a page that we can visit for as many years as possible. Hopefully everyone will be able to visit, maybe not each day for some.. but it will be there for everyone seeking to obtain the solace that You provided. The Solace you had in life..is definitely not gone with your passing. I feel it, know it, and ask for it ever day when I talk to you!
Every time I go into a burning building..I pray that your by my side. Guiding me through pitch blackness conditions to keep myself and my fire company safe...like I know you can!
I have told your mother and sister already and I'm sure if you have been watching down and blessing all of us...you are already well aware that you are going to be an official Uncle! (Congratulations! I can see a smile on your face with that one!) :)
We aren't sure of the sex yet..but Tina is over 8 weeks along now. Ultrasounds look great. Strong heartbeat and everything is in place. With any luck...and help from God...we are expecting a baby on March 17, 2007. St. Patrick's Day! haha I know you'll be beside me in spirit..as we always tried to be beside each other to celebrate our important occasions and celebrations! Your mother is already promising to possibly baby-sit for us a few times! haha One that I'm sure we will arrange!:)
My wish is that someday...hopefully....long from now...I will join you again and we will both await..the arrival of my wife, children, your family and we can celebrate like old times. I miss those times! More than anything...just knowing you were having a good time and the SMILE on your face is enough for me! I wish that I could ask for this to come sooner...but I know I'm not in control of who is writing that "plan".
Until then. Thanks for showing us what true love, dedication, integrity, and what the meaning of life..really is all about!
Especially friendship!
Your friend until - infinity,
C.L.

I met Matt through Lori Fowler when she asked me to help head up the bone marrow drive in Matts honor. It was a pleasure to know Matt, he never complained or had a negative attitude about anything. His smile brighten the day of kids all over this campus. He was a truly remarkable man and my life is better for knowing him. Thank you so much for bringing him into this world and allowing him to touch the lives of so many. He will be remembered always. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

I was just informed of your loss, and am deeply saddened by his passing. Matt was a very welcome addition to the photography Dept. and it was an honor to have known such a fine young man.
Godspeed to you and yours.

Dear Family,
I only knew Matt a little from when he would have dinner at my parents house (Nappers) and from what my dad would say about him and the occasional emails we would exchange. But I knew enough to know what a wonderful young man he was that will be greatly missed! I just happened to remember one of the times when Matt, Chris and a few other guys from the station came over. Matt had just gotten there, Matt loved moms home made rolls! He went into the kitchen and looked at mom and asked "any rolls yet?" and she said "didn't make any" and he said "Well then I'm going home". We all laughed and then mom pointed out where the rolls were at. I lost count of how many rolls he ate that evening.
My prayers are with you and I know Matt is looking over every one!

To the family,
I met Matt back in photography classes at TCC. He was a delight to be in class with and we became such good friends. He had the same work ethics as I did in school and we seemed to be buddies from the start even considering our age difference. Matt modeled for me on a number of assignments of which the photographs were then and are now cherished! He always wanted either his jeep, his fire gear or his smile in the shot. He even let my 16 yr old son pretend the jeep was his for a picture to show off. That one I actually have on my wall. Matt loved a good game of pool, laughter, a nice tan, and a good attitude. I have many fond memories of Matt and I will miss him dearly! One of the craziest times was when he took me mudding to get that 'perfect' photo! I am somewhat numb thinking of him gone and pray that i find comfort somewhere down the road. May God bless his family, of whom he talked about so dearly, during this most difficult time. We have lost an amazing young man....
Sincerely, Dara Couch

I first met Matt when he took one of my history courses at TCC a while back. He had bigger problems than any of my other students, yet complained less. His attitude and determination inspired me and we spoke together almost every day for the next 2-years between classes. I will miss him more than I can say for he was truly spectacular. I wish that all of my students could have met him because he had such a positive impact on everyone's lives. I wish his family the very best and I congratulate them for raising such a fine person. We all miss him very much . . .

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. We remember Matt when Chris & Cory were still in little league. Apparently he grew up to be quite a fine young man and will be missed tremendously by all that knew and loved him. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
