Shelton Hunter Obituary

Shelton Barcus Hunter

September 11, 1954 - December 16, 2025

Fort Worth, Texas - Shelton Barcus Hunter of Fort Worth entered the gates of larger life on December 16, 2025, after a long illness.

Memorial Service: 1:00 p.m. January 10, 2026, at St. Andrews Anglican Church, 917 Lamar St, Fort Worth; with a reception following the service at 2:00 p.m. at the Fort Worth Club, 306 W 7th St, Fort Worth.

Barcus was born September 11, 1954, in Midland, Texas, to Mary Barcus Hunter and Charles Shepherd Hunter. He graduated from Midland High School in 1973. He graduated from Washington & Lee University, cum laude, in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He was a member of the Phi Delta Gamma fraternity. Barcus obtained his law degree from Texas Tech University in 1980.

Barcus met his first wife, Amy Erskine, while at Washington & Lee and they were married on August 4, 1979, in Philadelphia, PA. Following Barcus's graduation from law school in December 1980, he and Amy moved to Fort Worth where they remained for the rest of their lives. Barcus and Amy raised a son, Matthew, who lives in Fort Worth. Amy and Barcus remained married until Amy's death in 2015.

In 2023, Barcus reconnected with his good friend Raney Naughton. Raney and Barcus fell in love and were married on October 4, 2025. Interestingly, Barcus and Raney were both born on September 11, 1954, in the same hospital in Midland, Texas. Barcus and Raney were very much in love and treasured their all too brief time together. Despite Barcus's illness, he and Raney were able to enjoy a honeymoon trip to New York City in October 2025.

Barcus was a devout Christian. He attended St. Andrews Anglican Church in Fort Worth for over 40 years. He was extremely active in the church serving in a number of roles including Senior Warden, lay reader and member of the choir. Barcus supported the men's ministry in numerous ways as well as various global and community ministries. He was an ambassador for Christ and actively sought opportunities to share the Gospel with those God placed in his path.

Barcus practiced law in Fort Worth for over 40 years. He had many interests, including gardening, running, and music. He was also a life-long Boy Scout volunteer serving in a number of capacities throughout his adult life. He and his son Matthew were both Eagle Scouts and Barcus truly epitomized the phrase "Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle."

Over the past year, Barcus was blessed by a number of loving and devoted caregivers of Comfort Keepers as well as numerous doctors, nurses and rehabilitation specialists. The family wishes to thank all of the caregivers and other health professionals who have helped and cared for Barcus during his illness.

Barcus never met a stranger and never held a grudge. He had an incomparable ability to make and keep friends. Unsurprisingly, he leaves behind numerous friends, both near and far, from school, scouting, work, church, volunteer groups, his Crestwood neighborhood and beyond.

Barcus was preceded in death by his first wife, Amy Hunter; his father, Charles Hunter; and mother, Mary Hunter.

He is survived by Raney Holbrook Hunter, of Fort Worth; son, Matthew Hunter of Fort Worth; brother, Tom Hunter and wife, Michelle, of Austin; nephews, Alec Hunter and wife, Eliza of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Holden Hunter of New York City.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County, located in downtown Fort Worth. Website: https://ugm-tc.org/donate/

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. It was a real privilege to have known Barcus while working with him in Scouting. I recently had a nice visit with him after not having seen him in years. He hadn't changed much - still a class act in every sense of the term. He will be missed.

Barc was always a good friend. I'm sorry to say we didn't keep in touch after High School. I'm sorry for the big hole his parting has left. I'm sending love and prayers.

Barc was a friend, and a great help to me while I navigated being a Scout leader in another troop. We discussed hiding out for a few weeks at Philmont, but we figured it would be the first place people would know to look. We all leave a part of ourselves there, but we take a larger part of it with us. I'll miss his common sense wisdom and humor stated in his West Texas accent. Vaya con Dios, Barcus.

Barc,
The Haslams will miss you. Thank you for working with us and praying together at St Andrews. I will never forget your memorable line when we were frustrated with a bankruptcy case that the opponent in bankruptcy kept making what we perceived were false statements, and Barc said: " When you give up your morales, the rest is easy". Thanks for your expertise and working hard for a win for our client. I always enjoyed our conversations and time together. Bob Haslam
