Steven Bartlett Obituary

Steven Robert "Steve" Bartlett Sr., 68, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Service: An inurnment celebrating Steve's life and remembering his service to our country will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 24, in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Steve was born Dec. 14, 1946, in Tacoma, Wash., to Hazel Helen and Norbert "Shorty" Bartlett. After graduating from high school, Steve enlisted in the United States Army and trained to be a helicopter pilot. Steve had a distinguished history with the Army, ranking as a chief warrant officer. He was on active duty from June 3, 1966, to April 15, 1974, logging over 1,200 combat hours. He served two tours in Vietnam, the first in 1967 and again in 1970. Steve was awarded multiple honors and awards for acts done in connection with his two tours in Vietnam, including numerous Purple Hearts and two Distinguished Flying Cross awards for his bravery. When asked about his heroic acts, he always replied, "We all were just fighting to bring our brothers home." After his service in Vietnam, Steve taught helicopter lessons and performed in air shows at Fort Stewart in Savannah, Ga., where he earned additional honors and awards. Upon moving to Arlington in 1973, Steve worked while earning his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Arlington, graduating in 1977. After a career as an engineer for General Dynamics, he retired and began working with his son, Steven Jr. Steve was a loyal friend, attentive father and proud grandfather, passing along life lessons to his children and grandchildren, and sharing with them his passions -- playing golf, hunting, fishing and reading good action novels. Steve was a kind and generous man, who was always eager to help people in need. He will be missed. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Larry; and sister, Kathryn. Survivors: Steve leaves behind his daughter, Jennifer Bartlett; daughter and son-in-law, Emily and John Augustat; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Jill Bartlett; grandchildren, Andrew and Lauren Farlow (Augustat), Tanner and Gwenyth Bartlett, and John Michael Augustat; and beloved cousins and friends, with many of whom he shared great golf games.

After 55 years, I still remember meeting you in Panama City Beach, FL; pinning on your wings at Fort Rucker in Alabama (my home state); you staying in Birmingham to be with me; you purchasing my round-trip plane ticket (my first time to fly) to meet and visit your family in Puyallup, Washington for a week; the fun and laughter we shared and my first fishing trip; the night you placed an engagement ring on my finger while dining at the Space Needle in Seattle; your leaving for Vietnam. If only our cultures had been closer and the departure for Vietnam could have come at a later time, things might have been different. Although I´ve been married for well over 50 years and dearly love my husband and children, I have never forgotten you and my husband and children know about you and me.
I will never forget you!

I only knew Steve on the golf course through the Mid-Cities Seniors group. But, I enjoyed numerous rounds of golf with him. He was a good golfer and a great guy. We will miss him dearly. May the peace of God and His Blessings be with all of his loved ones.

Steve was my first cousin. There was a bar-b-que at the home of Helen, our Aunt, years ago. Steve flew up with a suitcase full of frozen Texas white-tailed deer steaks and we grilled those and fresh oysters supplied by Carroll Rieck. It was a large family gathering. I was discussing knife-making with Steve and mentioned that Uncle Bob Rieck was teaching me the craft. He asked how much I needed to buy a belt grinder, the primary tool of a knife-maker, and he pulled out his wallet and handed over the money. He said he needed a good boning knife because he boned out about a dozen deer a year after hunting with his friend Butch. That jump-started my knife-making career. Years later Steve came up and funded a steelhead fishing trip and I was invited to go along. We were discussing knife-making in the motel room again and he asked what tool I needed the most right then. In the morning on the way to breakfast he reached over and shoved a wad of cash into my front pocket and said he needed a chef knife. Both times I felt a little uncomfortable taking the cash, but Steve was determined and I could tell he got great pleasure out of being generous.
