Steven Kent Obituary

Steven R Kent

December 28, 1943 - September 29, 2024

Benbrook, Texas - Steven R. Kent ,"Steve", age 80, of Benbrook, TX, passed away September 29, 2024 after a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (née Prior) for 51 years who survives him.

Steve was born and raised in Des Moines, IA. After graduating from Drake University with a degree in Corporate Finance, Steve held various executive roles within the Insurance Industry finishing his distinguished career at Houston General Insurance Company as the Senior Vice President - Finance, Secretary and Treasurer as well as a board member. He also served on the Republic National Bank Bankruptcy Creditor Committee. Steve was able to take an early retirement where he built a business, Mayo Performance, Inc., centered around his love for all things Porsche.

Steve was a lifelong learner and enjoyed sharing his knowledge. Even as a young boy, he devoured the encyclopedia while he recovered from polio. He was known as a raconteur, a person who had many stories to tell. He was a problem solver who offered solutions.

He valued contributing to his community. He was active in the Benbrook City Council, and his religious communities at St. Bart's Catholic Church and Arborlawn United Methodist Church. After his retirement, he found great satisfaction volunteering in the Prisoner Entrepreneur Program (PEP), where he mentored numerous felons teaching them managerial skills and building business plans they could use to sustain themselves upon release.

Steve lived his life to the fullest. In his younger days, he performed as a clown in water ski acts at the Alton Water Ski Club. He was very active and a prominent driver in the Porsche Club of America and Corinthian Vintage Auto Racing Club circuits. He was a skilled driver on the track and coached others how to improve their times.

Steve and Barbara enjoyed the time they shared together from the day-to-day cooking and baking to traveling the world by cruising. Steve is also survived by his daughters, Tricia Kent Goldfarb of Highland Park, IL, Linda (Joe) Halik of Island Lake, IL, and KC (Cameron) Kent Etezadi of Seattle, WA; granddaughters Emily Halik, Talah Goldfarb, and Phoebe Goldfarb. He was predeceased by his parents Dee (née Kurt) Kent and Robert J. Kent, and his sister Susan (the late John) Crandall.

In gratitude for the incredible care and knowledge of his UT Southwestern Pulmonary Hypertension & Heart and Lung medical teams, Steve requested his body be donated to the UTSW Medical Center's Willed Body Program for the advancement of science.

Steve's impact on the participants of PEP will forever resonate in our hearts. He was a beacon of hope in challenging times, pouring his energy and compassion into ensuring that every man felt supported. With his infectious smile and warm laughter, he created an environment where growth and learning flourished. He didn't shy away from delivering hard truths, always with the intention of guiding our participants on their journey in business and life. I speak for everyone touched by PEP when I say that Steve´s presence will be profoundly missed.
