Virginia Duncan Obituary

Virginia Ruth Duncan

January 26, 1929 - March 10, 2025

Fort Worth, Texas - Virginia Ruth West Duncan, 96, passed away from this life on March 10, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family.

Visitation: 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2025, at Greenwood Funeral Home in Memorial Suite B, 3344 White Settlement Rd., Fort Worth, Texas 76107. Graveside Service: 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2025, at Greenwood Memorial Park.

Virginia was born to William Oscar West and Willie Josephine Cassell West on January 26, 1929 in Fort Worth, Texas. Though she grew up and worked in Fort Worth for several years after graduating early from North Side High School at the age of 15, she spent much of her life in Abilene, Texas. There she met and married the love of her life, Charles Henry "Charlie" Duncan, to whom she was married for 31 years.

Virginia was a true career woman, demonstrated by the fact that she held many important executive positions over her more than 60 years of employment. Her positions at Midcontinent Oil & Gas Company as well as the Railroad Commission in Abilene prepared her for her 31 years at West Central Texas Municipal Water District where she retired as the assistant to the CEO. Upon moving back to Fort Worth, she worked at Greenwood Funeral Home for over 16 years.

While she would tell anyone she met how much she enjoyed being a working woman, she was proudest of her services roles in her community. These included her years of service on the board of the Abilene Boys Ranch and the Abilene Girls Home. Virginia was an active member of the National Secretaries Association who honored her with an award for Leadership and Enthusiastic Spirit. The mayor of Abilene also honored her with an award for Secretary of the Year in 1983. Her other areas of service included The American Business Women's Association, the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, as well as President of the Soroptimist Organization. She was also a member of the National Water Conservationist Association, the National Association of Female Executives and the Texas Cattle Raisers Association.

She enjoyed over 60 years of membership in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Eastern Star. As a loyal servant of God, Virginia was a member of North Fort Worth Baptist Church, First Baptist of Abilene and finally Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth. The scripture she lived by was, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Acts 20:35. Her generosity knew no bounds.

Virginia was a loving wife, aunt, great-aunt, great-great-aunt, and a beautiful soul who would help anyone. Her radiant smile lit up any room she entered. She lived life to the fullest and especially loved spending time with her family, friends and her beloved dogs.

She is survived by her nephew, Randy L. Jones D.V.M. and wife, Cindy; great-niece, Meredith Jones Yount and husband, Chris, and their children, Jack, Luke and Violet; great-niece, Leslie Anne Jones Stewart and husband, Chase, and their children, Hunter and Lydia.

Virginia was a member in the Ziphron Temple No. 100, Daughters of the Nile in San Angelo. Although I never had the opportunity to meet Virginia in person as she had already moved to Ft. Worth before I joined the Organization, I did talk with her several times on the phone. She was a lovely lady who enjoyed her friends and her time with us in Nile. To her family, please accept our sincere condolences for your loss. Junior Past Queen, Nancy Harris.
