Walter Fitzpatrick Obituary

Walter Raymond Fitzpatrick, Jr

September 25, 1926 - December 18, 2023

Southlake, Texas - Walter Raymond Fitzpatrick, Jr. passed away on December 18 after living a long, fulfilling life of 97 years. He was born on September 25, 1926, to Anna Aline Dubus and Walter Raymond Fitzpatrick, Sr. in New Orleans, Louisiana. He paused his education at Loyola University to serve as Naval Communications Officer in World War II, the Korean War and continued serving in the reserves. Following his military service, he completed his JD and began his long and successful career as a civil attorney.

In 1961, Walter met Brunnhilde Sonja Gutmann, a stewardess with Delta Air Lines who was based in New Orleans. Their mutual love of opera, literature and thirst for experiencing the world through travel brought them together. After marrying in Caracas, Venezuela they resided in New Orleans for the next 28 years raising their four children. They followed their children to Texas and lived in Trophy Club until 2022.

Walter was a man of intellect and good humor with a love for his family and community. He was an active member of the Krewe of Carrollton, Knights of Columbus and enjoyed participating in local regattas, early morning fishing trips to the south Louisiana marshland, playing poker with friends and rooting for the New Orleans Saints.

Storytelling came naturally. Although his children and grandchildren were quite familiar with the stories and jokes he would tell around the dinner table, they always reacted as if it were the first time they heard each story, recalling his navy days or a particular university professor.

Walter was preceded in death by his daughters, Natalie and Karen. He is survived by his wife Brunnhilde, sons Gregory and wife Paula, Bryan and partner Stephanie, grandchildren Kenyon, Kade, Braydon and Breckin, nephew Mark and niece Alicia.

The family would like to thank the staff at Benevolent Hearts Home Care, HarborChase Southlake and the Visiting Nurses Association for the kindness and excellent care Walter received.

We will forever remember the joy Walter brought to many friends and family from Louisiana to Texas, from Venezuela to Germany and beyond.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30am on Friday January 19 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Keller, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Williams Syndrome Association at https://www.williams-syndrome.org

My wife and I enjoyed visits with him, Brunie and Karen in their home.
