William Holden Obituary

William (Bill) Holden
July 25, 1950 - November 15, 2021
Knoxville, Tennessee - William (Bill) Oneal Holden, of Knoxville Tennessee, passed away suddenly on November 15, 2021 at the age of 71. Born July 25, 1950 in Fort Worth, Texas, he was the son of the late Wilmer Oneal Holden and Evelyn Billibert (Williams) Holden.
Bill is survived by his partner of many years Suzanne Simmons, children Andrew and Emily Holden; siblings Bari Holden and Susan Ward; grandchildren Cameron and Carly Holden as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
Bill achieved many accomplishments in his life, developing a passion for bluegrass music and football in high school where, by listening to bluegrass artists like Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson and with the aid of Stephen Bruton, he learned his first primary chords and modes for picking the banjo and the guitar and he became quite adept at both. Bill also excelled as an athlete as a tri-captain of the Arlington Heights football team and later as a college athlete playing with the University of Oklahoma Sooners Football Team through his sophomore year. Notably, Bill forged a career as a professional musician, playing guitar, bass, fiddle & banjo with many of the greats in bluegrass including Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, The Country Gentlemen, and James Monroe & the Midnight Ramblers as well as with many other famous artists and musicians.
Bill worked hard after his music career in a range of industries and running his own businesses until retiring in Tennessee. Bill will be remembered for many things, including a larger than life personality and especially for his musical talent and love for/contributions to the history of Bluegrass music.
A private family celebration will take place at a later time.

I just learned of Bill's death and I am so sorry. I met him in San Antonio when I played with the TVA. He was a great person and kind and gentle man. Although I can remember him tackling another musician at a bluegrass festival, just for fun! He was lots of fun. He will be missed.

Bill was the most exceptional man that I've ever known. He loved his children dearly, and He made me feel loved daily. He always provided assistance and protection eagerly. He was extremely talented in guitar banjo, and his voice. His intellect and personality never failed to entertain, and he was an excellent writer. He never forgot a name or a face, and was always friendly. I was blessed to be with him.He read consistently, knew the Bible, and quoted it often. He was really looking forward to being in Heaven with Christ, family, and friends. If we have soul mates, he was mine. I pray we'll be together again.

It was an honor to me having Bill as a friend. Bill was a special guy and it saddens me that he´s no longer with us. He will be missed.

Years ago I was introduced to Bill after Doc Hamilton gave him my phone number. Bill and I exchanged several calls and letters. I've had a web page up for a long time, but it is now my tribute to Bill* , May He Rest in Peace. My prayers and sympathies to Suzanne and all his extended family and friends.
