Highway 144, Granbury 76048; or a charity of choice.
Bill Sarsgard was born Nov. 23, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Pierre and Eva Jean Sarsgard. The family moved to Fort Worth shortly afterward. Bill always considered Fort Worth his home. He attended Fort Worth public schools, graduating from Arlington Heights High School in 1944. He attended Texas Christian University for one year before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, from which he was honorably discharged in 1947.
Bill entered the University of Texas, where he received his undergraduate degree in 1949 and his law degree in 1951. While there, Bill met, courted and married Helen Culbertson, also of Fort Worth. They returned to Fort Worth after Bill graduated from law school and Bill began his legal career, joining what eventually became the law firm of Hudson, Keltner & Sarsgard.
In 1959, Bill left the private practice of law to become the vice president and secretary of A.B. Culbertson & Company, a corporation that specialized in financing church and institutional construction. Bill eventually became president and chairman of the board of that company. He also became chairman of the board for Trust Management, Inc., a corporation also dedicated to church finance and construction and on whose board he served until his death.
Bill and Helen had three children, Kathy, Debbie and Roger. Bill was constantly involved in their lives and activities, from pre-school through college.
Bill also found time to be heavily involved in Fort Worth. He was elected to the city council in 1967 and re-elected in 1969. Upon taking office in 1967, the council elected him mayor pro tem and he served in that capacity for his entire four-year tenure on the council.
Later Bill was president of the North Central Texas Council of Governments, chairman of the City of Fort Worth Planning Commission, president of the Rotary Club of Fort Worth, president of the Advisory Board of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, president of the Moncrief Radiation Center, president of the Tarrant County Health Planning Council, vice president of the Tarrant County Community Council, and chairman of the board of Trinity Terrace.
He also served as a board member for the Tarrant County Hospital District, United Way of Metropolitan Tarrant County, Lena Pope Home, St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, Amon Carter Blood Center, Texas State Board of Education, the Tarrant County Food Bank and the Executive Service Corps. Bill was also active in his churches, serving as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Broadway Baptist Church and later as an elder at First Presbyterian Church.
After waging a courageous battle with cancer, Helen Culbertson Sarsgard died in November of 1977.
In 1980, Bill rekindled a high school courtship with Joanne Olmsted Bryant. They were married in 1981 and spent 26 wonderful years together, traveling the world and enjoying the accomplishments of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen; and Joanne's daughter, Marilou Labovitz.
Survivors: Beloved wife, Joanne; daughters, Kathy Cleaveland and her husband, Jack, Debbie Whitton and her husband, Jim; son, William Roger Sarsgard Jr.; grandchildren, Kim and Katie Cleaveland, Lauren and Sarah Whitton, William, Christopher and Alyssa Sarsgard; nephews, Dee Finley and his wife, Becky, Bob Finley and his wife, Harriet, and Pat Finley; Joanne's family includes children, Becky Green and her husband, Ben, Mark Bryant and his wife, Roxanne; grandchildren, Becca Cheng and her husband, Johnny, Joanna Gafford and her husband, Terry, John, Julie and Elliot Bryant, Lee Labovitz and his wife, Karyn, Todd Labovitz, Sheila Stanton and her husband, Jimmy, Tami Fincher and her husband, Steve; sister-in-law, Sybil Baldwin; brother-in-law, Paul Olmsted; and son-in-law, Jack Labovitz; several great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

I heard about Bill's death in a roundabout way and I was surprised and saddened, although it has been several years since I left Ruidoso. I remember his kindness. Please know that you are all in my prayers.

Joanne, although I know that you are surrounded by many loving friends and family, I felt the need to convey my sadness at your loss. Your beautiful, smiling face and your sweetness brightened my days in school and later as we moved into adult lives. Blessings and love to you

Those of you that knew him well, knew that one of his favorite words was "Superb". Now, ironically, that is the one word that most describes him and his life; a Superb man that lived a Superb life.

I have worked for him for more than 21 years, and it has been an honor and a privilege that I cannot find words to describe. He was my boss and my mentor, but more importantly he was my friend, and I will miss him greatly.

Rest peacefully, Mr. Sarsgard. I love you.

I am sorry that a schedule conflict prevented me from attending Bill's memorial service. I have read all of the entries in this guestbook and realize that Bill was just the man I knew him to be; intelligent, warm, friendly and someone who always looked out for his family and fellow man. It was a pleasure to know him, and he will obviously be missed by many.

To the Family and Friends of Bill Sarsgard,

While we on Earth mourn Bill's passing, the angels in Heaven have rejoiced and already are fellowshiping and worshiping our Lord with him in their midst. He may have already run for Heaven's council or for President of a service club there. However one gets to serve others, he will be the first in line.

Having only met him on two occassions, I cannot call him a friend. But I have observed for many years how his friends call him: Mr. Sarsgard. They say his name with a special tone reserved today for oh so few men.

I was fortunate to have known him and will carry my memories of and respect for him forever. But that I would have people honor me half as much as he will be honored tomorrow would give me much more honor than I would ever be due.

May God's peace be upon his family and friends.

Bill

After reading your obituary today, I came away feeling as though my life, compared to yours, is practically nothing. If any of us could accomplish a tenth of what you did in your lifetime, we would be a success. I have been inspired to volunteer today (Meals on Wheels) and will seek other ways to be of service to others - by your example. I know you will be greatly missed by your family and a multitude of friends. Rest easily with the Lord.

Joanne, Kathy and Debbie,
Bill was truly blessed by the women in his family. Bill was about the first person I met when we moved to Fort Worth. I went to my first class at Striping Jr Hi and was seated between Bill and Lucie Gano who would remain friends for the rest of their lives. You know how outstanding Bill was and how honored his friends were to have him in our lives. My life is currently filled with Doctors appointments and I have one of these appointments in Dallas Tuesday morning so will be unable to attend Bill's memorial service. I will be thinking of all of you and sending you loving thoughts and prayers. Peggy McClung

Joanne,

From the day that Bill first walked into our home in Ruidoso almost ten years ago, we knew that God had blessed us with a very special friendship with you two. His smile, his loving spirit, his gentle presence, and his unfailing wit made our times together so special. It has already been hard to look out our front window there and see a house he will not be returning to again. He often greeted our arrival with a vigorous "Welcome!" from your front deck. Oh, how we will miss him. You are both such special parts of our lives, and we love you so much.

Godspeed to a precious man, Bill Sarsgard. He is in our hearts forever.

We love you,
Nancy and Lynn Shaw

Joanne and family,
I worked at Culbertson from 1982 until it closed in 1997. It was such a privilege to know such a man as Mr. Sarsgard. He was a special man and always had time to visit with you. I was invited and attended his 75th birthday party. He will be missed not only by his family but the family he had at A. B. Culbertson and Company and the one he has at Trust Management.

William Roger Sarsgard - Bill, it was an honor and a privilege to know you for more than 30 years. This whole thing started in 1974 when you – as was typical for you – through your presidency in Rotary moved heaven and earth to help a then unknown stranger from Denmark – my Dad Johannes – when he came to Harris Hospital – Ft. Worth for a much needed open heart surgery. Back in those days, this was an operation not possible in Denmark, and his best prognosis was from a few to 6 month. You and your fellow Rotarians made this in many ways very difficult trip and stay so much easier for him and my Mother who accompanies him to Ft. Worth. And you know what they say, when you help save a life, that person becomes your responsibility. That made you and all yours family.
Through the years I got to know you as a generous, honest, and modest person. Humble, unselfish and thankful for what life offered you. Always willing to offer a helping hand to person in need. A warm and gentle man full of faith, (underplayed) humor – sometimes almost to the point of “a practical joker” – but always respectful and conscious not to hurt other peoples feelings. All these altruistic qualities is impossible to hold in only one person, but everyone who truly knew you know that this was all you – and more.
To me you were – and will continue to be – a role model, one of the finest men I have ever met. Cathrine, Pia and I all love you.

Thanks for being – Bill.
