Richard Smith Obituary

Dick Smith passed away January 18, 2025 in Yuma, AZ with his wife by his side. Dick was born April 23, 1951 in Dillon, MT to Roy and Lois Smith. Dick attended school in Dillon and graduated from Beaverhead County High School in 1969. He then attended 1 year of diesel mechanic school in Denver, CO. Upon returning to Dillon, Dick married his high school sweetheart, Shannon Dougherty on November 5, 1971. Dick and Shannon welcomed their only child, Trina, in 1972.

Dick worked at Pfizer, Inc until 1978 when his mother purchased Robertson Ready Mix and changed the name to L.S. Ready Mix Concrete, Inc. Dick learned the concrete, precast, sand and gravel business and worked in every area of the business for 47 years. Dick was still working during non-winter months driving his semi, bringing the cement to the plant from Helena and Missoula. It was what he loved to do and would often stop along the way to take pictures.

Dick enjoyed ranch life growing up and developed a love for the outdoors. Dick loved to golf and he and Shannon spent many years bowling. Later in life, he took a liking to photography, which became his passion. He rarely left home without a camera. He had a keen eye and could "work his magic" on any photo.

Dick was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, colleague, friend and neighbor. He could fix anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Dick and Shannon took the winter months off to enjoy the Arizona sunshine. They enjoyed side by siding, trips to Mexico with friends and occasional happy hours at their home in Yuma, AZ.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Lois Smith, his nephew Micheal O'Connor and brother-in-law Jim Bolin. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Shannon, daughter Trina McCullough (Flint), grandsons J.T. Whitworth and Derek McCullough (Shay), great-grandchildren Maci, Greyson and Oaklynn McCullough, brother Terry O'Connor, twin sister Debbie Bolin, niece Lisa Bradley and nephew Jim Bolin. Cremation has taken place in Yuma, AZ and a celebration of life will be held Saturday, February 8 at the Frontier Event Center in Dillon at 1:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to Engine 18 Foundation at www.engine18.org.

I want to send Shannon and the family the hope that the many amazing memories you have of Dick will come to heal the sorrow you have now. Dick and Shannon were so generous when I first moved to Dillon and rented their little cabin in the woods. It was a warm and welcoming experience for me and my canine family. Great people touch many lives.
