Abbot Gaunt Obituary

GAUNT Abbot "Toby" S. Gaunt, Professor emeritus, Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology (previously Zoology), The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, died March 30, 2006 in the OSU Ross Heart Hospital. He was 69 and is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sandra, the two children and grandchildren of his late sister, Susan Shepard, cousin, Kathleen Davidson and her two children, and by his devoted friends, Olive and Lew Greenwald, Rodger Mitchell and Leslie Laufman. Prof. Gaunt was born in Methuen, MA and was a graduate of Amherst College (BA) and the University of Kansas (Ph.D). He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and of the American Ornithologists' Union. He was an avid music lover, bird watcher, fly fisherman, and Buckeye fan, and his wit and intelligence will always be cherished. A celebration of his life is to be arranged at a later time. Sincere and special thanks for their skill and devoted care are extended to Dr. Mark Galantowics, Cardiothoracic Surgeon from Children's Hospital, and his surgical team, Dr. Mary Fontana and Dr. Michael Cooper, Toby's long time cardiologists at Ohio State University Hospital, and the staff at the Ross Heart Hospital, especially those on the 4th floor. Contributions may be made in memory of Abbot Gaunt to The Columbus Symphony Orchestra, 55E State Street, Columbus, Oh 43215 or The Ohio Wildlife Center, 2611 Billingsly Road, Columbus OH 43235. Sandy,

I'm so sorry to hear about Toby. He was one of those people who just seemed like he should be a fixture of Ohio State. He was a good friend and we're all diminished by his loss.

Dear Sandy--Though miles and years have kept us apart, I will always have the fondest memories of Toby--adviser, friend, mentor, and inspiration. The time I spent "under his wing" was unforgettable, and helped this fledgling learn how to soar. You and Toby are always in my thoughts...love you both.

Sandy

I am very sorry for your loss. I have some idea of how agonizing and stressful it must have been for you both. I wish you the best. Fly fishing and gardening will always be there, as well as your friends.

All the best

Toby's left me with wonderful memories of a cool guy with a sharp wit and deep intellect. He's unique, an unforgettable person, whose sense of humor and pen-pal emailings will be missed. I have saved the hundreds from the past and can check them again and again for a smile.
