Abe Price Obituary

Price Abe Price, born January 9, 1923, died February 25, 2014. A native of Poland, he was a Holocaust survivor who met his wife, Sala Price, following World War II. They met, fell in love and married within two weeks and celebrated their new life together each day for over 62 years, a true love story. They were devoted to each other and to their family. They came to the United States in 1951, first to Goshen, IN, then moving to South Bend, IN, where they raised their three sons, Herbert, Harry and Sidney. In South Bend, his vocation was retail management, but his avocation was his family. In 1987, Abe and Sala retired to Naples where they became active members of Temple Shalom and founding members of the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida. Abe became a tireless volunteer and active public speaker whose mission in life was history and Holocaust education. He frequently made presentations before schools, churches, community groups and civic organizations. His sharing of vivid stories of the hardships suffered by individuals simply because of their status, be it religious, ethnic or otherwise, resonated with his audience. As a survivor of religious persecution, he treasured the freedoms afforded by the United States. He worked hard to make certain that no one forgets what so many endured. Through his books, articles and children his legacy will live on. History is often something we study, but seldom do we experience history through the eyes of a survivor. In later years, as his wife's health deteriorated, he selflessly devoted himself to her care and well being. Sala was the love of his life, and taking care of her became his life. He loved her dearly. Abe will be sadly missed by his dedicated sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Herbert and Patti Price of Logansport, IN, Harry and Lori Price of Los Altos Hills, CA and Dr. Sidney and Patti Price of Dublin, OH; grandchild, David Price; and great-grandchildren, Jessica, Nicholas, Meisha and Brady; grandchild, Dr. Monica Price Kowaleski and husband, Kevin Kowaleski; grandchild, Jacalyn and her husband, Wayne Pollock; and great-grandchild, Spencer; grandchild, Carleigh Price; grandchild, Dr. Mindy Price Weily and her husband, Ryan Weily; grandchild, Dr. Jeffrey Price and his wife, Jessica Germain Price; and grandchild, Jonathan Price. Funeral service will be held at Temple Shalom, 4630 Pine Ridge Road, Naples, FL 34119 Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with graveside service to follow at Palm Royale Cemetery. Shiva will be observed on Monday evening, March 3, 2014. In honor of our Jewish tradition, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Abe's memory to the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida, 4760 Tamiami Trail North, Naples, FL 34103 or Temple Shalom of Naples at the above address. Mr. and Mrs. Price were two of the sweetest people I remember growing up. I lived on Voll Lane in South Bend, Indiana next door to them. My parents were some of their closest friends. They both will be remembered forever. They were such an inspiration to everyone to find good in our world.
