Amy Blumenthal Obituary

Blumenthal Amy Beth Blumenthal, age 61, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Frances Blumenthal. She is survived by her husband, Sergei Lobanov-Rostovsky; daughter, Sophie Lobanov-Rostovsky; and sister, Hillary (Marc) Alpert. Amy was born, raised, and educated in New York City, which remained the home of her heart. In adulthood she also lived in San Francisco, Boston, Columbus, and Topsham, England. As Professor of English at Kenyon College she shared her passion for Renaissance literature with generations of students. As a writer and editor for Kenyon, she showed both alumni and prospective students the beauty and excitement of the college. Amy loved literature, traveling, tap and ballroom dancing, and bad puns. Her warmth, loving heart, and generosity of spirit were beyond measure. She will be terribly missed by her family and many beloved friends in Ohio and around the world. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30 at Temple Beth Shalom, 5089 Johnstown Rd., New Albany. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery Temple Beth Shalom section. The family will greet friends at their Bexley home Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the Global Fund for Women or the Temple Beth Shalom Social Justice Fund. My deepest condolences to Sergei and Sophie.

I remember Amy as having a unique combination of gentleness and acuity, and my conversations with her - about her teacher Lois Ebin, about Bakhtin (whom she disliked), about crossword puzzles and the NY Times acrostic in particular (and much more) - are still absolutely vivid to me. She was a wonderful friend.
