Brett Backus Obituary

BACKUS Brett Stephen Backus, age 42, died suddenly Saturday, December, 19th, 2009 at Mt. Carmel West of heart issues. Brett was born March 27, 1967 in Columbus, to Paul and Emma (Barnett) Backus. He was preceded in death by his mother Emma "Tootie" and will be reunited with her for Christmas this year. He is survived by his father, Paul S. Backus of Columbus; his sister, Treva and her husband, Jim Weaver of Westerville, and their three children; his brother, Chief Warrant Officer Two, Mark (Antje) Backus of Stuttgart, Germany, and their two children; his son, Stephen L. Backus (age 9); his wife, Lorrie (Potter) and their 2 year old son, Joshua and step-children, Amanda and Eleeyia. He is also survived by many uncles, aunts, cousins and loving friends. Brett grew up in Bexley and attended Bishop Hartley High School (class of 1985). He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and enjoyed serving overseas in Japan. Brett's charm, gift of gab, his hearty laugh, and his love of children will be greatly missed. He loved the Cowboys, the Buckeyes, but he mostly loved wrestling with his boys. Brett attended Resurrection Outreach Ministries, Intl. Church and appreciated the support of the pastors and members over the years. Visitation will be Wednesday 2 p.m. until the time of the service at 4 p.m. at MAEDER-QUINT-TIBERI FUNERAL HOME, 1068 S. High St. Pastors Glen and Pastor Linda Jones presiding. In lieu of flowers, a memorial for his children, Stephen and Joshua, has been established at Chase Bank - The Brett Backus Memorial Fund - to be administered by his brother-in-law, Jim Weaver. I miss Brett, but I know where he is. Even though he has loved ones still here, I don't believe that he would change places with any of us. Aunt Naomi,

I worked with Brett at Liberty. I was only there a month or so, but this literally sent a shock to me when I heard about it a moment ago. Brett was a great friend for the time I knew him, and could always cheer everyone up when they were down. He will be dearly missed...

Brett will be missed by more than just family. He was always a great playmate during those awkward family reunions where 1-2 days a year was never enough time to enjoy my family. I will never forget playing "Paper, Rock, Scizzors" against Brett to sit "shotgun" in Roberts obnoxiously loud dually pickup...and losing...and getting ribbed because he won 3 times in a row. May God give his family strength and hope for as long as it takes. Rest peacefully cousin.

We are all at a loss. This is not something any of us expects or are ever quite prepared for, especially when Brett was so young. My heart goes out to his father Paul, sister Treva, his children, and the rest of our family and friends. Brett was a good person who served our country and has now finally found peace with his Mommy and our Father!

Brett my dear cousin you can go in peace and be with your mommy now whom i know you missed very much. You will be missed daily and I'm so very happy that you found The Lord before you left this world and was able to know and love him. I'm sorry Uncle Paul and Treva, We all loved him very much and the way he could walk into a room and wear that Backus smile and bat those baby blue's. He reminds me of the stories I hear about Daddy. Very handsome, witty, and irreplaceable. All my love, Kelley A. Backus and kids, Mary Backus-Catron, Johnna Backus, Tonya Backus-O'Connor, and a plethera of cousins. Brett tell "Mom" We miss her and are thankful for the little bit of time God us gave with all of you!! And tell Daddy we miss and love him too. Good-Bye Brett see you in heaven:)
