Constance Smith Obituary

Smith Constance Norpell (Connie) Smith left us peacefully in her sleep on December 24th. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Jerome (Jay) and Marianne Smith of Columbus; daughter, Gayle Smith of Washington DC; grandson, Harrison (Ben) Smith and his wife Sarah Buckley of Columbus; and sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and David Dimick of Ft. Myers Fla. She is survived as well by dozens of the very best kind of friends of all ages and descriptions. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harrison W. (Bill) Smith; daughter Amy W. Smith and sister Patricia Bauer. Born November 10, 1926 in Newark Ohio, Connie lived her life to the fullest with an open mind and generosity of spirit with her family and her community and while seeing the world with the "travel group". She was devoted to the arts and to the betterment of the lives of urban children. She was always willing to let anyone know how she felt about the issues facing our community, country and world and always stood for what she believed to be right. No calling hours, a memorial gathering will be held Saturday, January 9th at 2 p.m. in the Derby Court of the Columbus Museum of Art. The family would like to thank Linda Benson for her loving friendship and care as well as Jackie, Joy and Jannetta, her wonderful caregivers and the people of Ohio Health Hospice. In lieu of flowers, Connie asked that contributions be made to TRANSIT ARTS, c/o Central Community House, 1150 East Main Street, Columbus, Ohio 43205, an arts organization for young people.

The Smith Family were the ultimate next door neighbors on North Parkview. Bill played endless games of basketball with us and my first attempts at baking anything were with Connie in the Smith's kitchen. Thank you Jay and Gayle, for sharing your parents with us. I hope Amy, Bill, Sarah, Malcolm, and Connie are all having a toast together :) Love, Bebe
