Courtney Roy Obituary

Roy Courtney Joelliette Roy, age 12. The world became a brighter place when it welcomed Courtney Joeliette Roy on February 2, 2001. Despite her tiny physique, she entered with a loud cry commanding everyone's attention despite. Her twin brother William, her first friend and life companion followed her debut. Courtney was the quintessential middle child caring warm and always ready to share or take the blemished piece food or toy. Her amazing disposition of being a polite, humble and caring young lady to the very end of her life was amazing. She was quick with a friendly hello, please or thank you. Courtney also loved being in the presence of her big sister Ryann with whom she shared a special loving bond. Courtney was an active member at Broad Street Presbyterian Church and was baptized October 21, 2001. She was able to witness God's presence, love and grace as church, family, and friends provided meals, visits, cards, and uplifting gifts during her illness. She found her greatest comfort and joy with her family, friends, and going to school. Even at her young age Courtney knew that the strength of a loving family could get her through the most difficult days. She did not take her family for granted, and delighted in saying, "I love you" to them. She was born with significant privilege, but never demonstrated her advantages. She freely shared all that she had with her siblings and friends. She had great empathy for all around her and would defend her brother William if he had run afoul and was being corrected more harshly than she felt was warranted. Courtney knew the gift of real friendship, and established life long friends during her eight years at Mansion Day School. She quickly made new friends at The Wellington School when she entered middle school. Courtney was a loyal and loving friend, and her self-confidence and mild manner attracted others to her. She carefully picked her friends so they would be permanent. Learning came easily to Courtney, and although she was intelligent and exceptionally bright, she never boasted. She was an excellent student and could have become anything she wanted. She often mentioned during her illness how much she missed going to school- a privilege so many take for granted. She was blessed to have her former fifth grade teacher 'Ms. Kim', to keep her academically on track and engaged. Traveling with her 7th Grade trip to Washington, D.C. and Williamsburg, VA with her classmates brought her such joy this past fall. Courtney enjoyed playing the piano, and participated in the National Piano Guild Auditions for the last two years earning special commendations. She was an avid reader, and prided herself on finishing the entire Harry Potter book series last year. Courtney loved going on family camping trips, spending time with family at holidays, making crafts, and being with her friends. God called Courtney home on January 15, 2014 after a short, but difficult battle with renal cancer. She was a courageous champion who showed such poise and grace. She was still able to find joy in her last days that made her smile. Courtney is survived by her parents, Tamera and Richard Roy; sister, Ryann Chambers Roy; brother, William Roy; grandparents, Claude and Elginne Johnson; aunts, Susan Johnson and Letitia Byrd; uncles, Randy Kinder, Gilford S. Vincent, and Merrit, Sr. Vincent; cousins, Alexis and David Sowell, Cameron Kinder; Gilford S., Jr., Gabrielle, and Victoria Vincent; and a host of other cousins, friends, and family. Although it was not in God's plan for us to see what Courtney may have become, we can only imagine how much more she would have impacted this world, had she had the opportunity. Celebration of life service 12Noon Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Broad Street Presbyterian Church, 760 East Broad St. Pastor Amy Miracle, officiating. The family will receive friends at the church Monday, 11 a.m. until the start of services. The family requests, that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mansion Day School, 72 Woodland Ave., Columbus, OH 43203. Arrangements entrusted to DIEHL-WHITTAKER FUNERAL SERVICE, 720 E. Long St. To sign the online guestbook, please visit www.diehl-whittaker.com/obits.

Tamara and Dr. Roy,
I want to express my deepest sympathy in the way too early home-going of your precious daughter. I remember meeting the twins and oldest daughter at your home some years ago and finding them to be very special young people. I truly understand your grief at this time, it seems impossible now and will for quite a while to come. I lost my oldest daughter just over 2 years ago and it has changed everything about me. I am sure as a doctor you feel like you should have been able to do something, but I have learned we all enter and end this life in God's time. This is one you will never understand and only by God's grace will you ever be able to move forward. Parents are never supposed to outlive children and I have found that we are never prepared for it and never get over it, but we do learn to live with what God has allowed to happen. I still remember her playing the piano and telling Courtney about both of my daughters doing the same.
Although the years were few the positive memories will still last a lifetime.
God bless you and family at this very sorrowful time my friend. HE will be with you and keep you, I know.

I'm so sorry for your loss, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. I feel very blessed that I was able to be Courtney's first grade teacher. She holds a special place in my heart and I only have good memories of her. She was so full of life and could make anyone laugh. Courtney was also extremely bright. She was such a good little reader and could read books that were beyond her years. I remember how she would look out for others (especially William) and how she would make sure everyone was being fair during recess. I will forever cherish those memories that I have of her.

From Kaylee to Courtney:

Courtney Roy. There is so many things I can say about you. I remember when I first met you I knew we would click. You're the funniest person. In art you would have me laughing so hard I would fall out of my chair laughing. Ahhh our inside jokes. The times me you Darius Katherine and Jaedyn would have in the tunnel were the best. Courtney I just want to thank you. Thank you for everything. Thank you for making me laugh. Thank you for supporting me. Thank you for telling me the truth. I could trust you with anything. The first I can think of for you is strong. You didn't let anything bring you down and that's one of the reasons I love to be your friend. Everything right now is a blur I'm dragging through life not knowing what's going on. I'm glad I got to go to your house haha when you hit me in the face with the ball. I'm glad you came to dc and the struggles I had. Courtney I don't know how I can make it through but I know what you will do. Stay strong I love you and all my prayers are going to you. Courtney I love to the moon and back and back to the moon and back again. ..... I miss you already, still love you I will love you forever, #wce #courtneyforever
