David Heer Obituary

Heer David W. Heer. The stars dimmed Sunday, May 22, 2016. David W. Heer, 70, of Brewster, New York, passed away at the home he loved. A native of Columbus, Ohio, David was born December 18, 1945 to the late Virginia and Walter F. Heer. Preceded in death by sister Nancy Heer. After graduating from Upper Arlington High School, Dennison University, American Management School, and a brief stint in banking, David began a life of travel. His adventure and intellectual curiosity included travels to France, Egypt, Jordan, South Africa, Germany, Poland, England, Australia and China, settling in Paris in his 20's. He then returned to the United States and began an entrepreneurial career in retail by establishing CHROMACARDS in New York City, an enterprise which specialized in unique greeting cards and novelty gifts or as David would proclaim in a very New York state of mind, "Purveyors of Fine Trash". Customers would flock from near and far to discover the best, most clever, fun items and to experience David's unique ingratiating charm and banter. After relocating to Brewster, New York, David opened CHROMAFUNKYCARDS in Brewster, Westport, CT, and Fairfield, CT., as well as on the internet. David's effusive personality was as much a reason to shop Chroma as the merchandise. You always left with a smile. David was also an energetic contributor to his community, and a supporter of challenges youth and the preservation of historic buildings. He served on the Board of Green Chimneys, an organization which helps challenged youth through animal therapy as well serving as a member of Landmarks Preservation Society of Southeast and a contributor to the Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition. To those fortunate to have shared David's universe, his presence will leave a great void. He was as the sun to our planets, bringing warmth and light and good cheer. His courage and stoicism in battling cancer is an example of dignity and selflessness to all. David is survived by his beloved spouse, Rick Reddy of Brewster, NY; brothers, Fred Heer (Judy), Tom Heer (Cyndi); nephew, Trent Heer; and a large extended family through blood and marriage, as well as loving friends who were touched by his generous nature. As per David's wishes, a private memorial will be held at a date to be announced.

I was so sad to see David's obituary in the Columbus Dispatch this morning. He was a classmate of mine starting in Kindergarten all the way through high school. Such a generous and kind person during times when a lot of our fellow classmates weren't due to the usual growing pains. Looking back it is no surprise that he was a success on both a personal and a business level. My deepest sympathies to his spouse, Rick, his brothers, nephew, and all who were touched by him.

Cousin David is everything described in his obituary and more! I am a better person for having both David and Rick in my life. David has and will continue to inspire me to embrace life in all ways. You live on my dear cousin through the many lives you have blessed over the years!
