David Kelly Obituary

Kelly David Robert "Dave" Kelly, MD, was a loving husband, father and grandfather, caring doctor, proud veteran, athlete, comedian, and best friend. He passed away peacefully at the age of 73 surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 13, 2014. Dave lived with unique passion on so many levels, a passion that his Mom and Dad would say started right out of the gate in Marion, Ohio in 1940. He graduated from Marion Catholic High School in 1958, graduated from the University of Dayton where he served as Class President, and graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1965. Dave was a physician and surgeon at The Ohio State University for over 30 years, interrupted only by his service to his Country in the United States Army from 1970-1972. In Vietnam, Dave was Chief of the Trauma Unit at the 24th Evacuation Hospital, Long Binh Post. His service was a source of pride his entire life. Dave loved his career as a doctor and medical student educator at Ohio State. Among his honors, Dave was the Vice-Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology and a recipient of the prestigious Honor Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He also served multiple terms as President of the American Cancer Society for Ohio and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Physicians for The Ohio State University. He was recognized as an "Outstanding Teacher" by the Department of Otolaryngology, known for his dynamic lectures. He also thoroughly enjoyed the honor and camaraderie of his affiliation with the Sierra Cascade Trauma Society, serving as a member and past President of the Columbus Medical Forum, and being the founding member of the Ohio ENT Surgery Center. Yet, clearly his greatest honor was serving his patients and working with his colleagues at the hospital, from the orderlies and nurses that he shared friendship and laughter with; to the medical residents that he loved teaching, learning from, and playing flag football with; to his fellow doctors he loved and respected. He was known by his patients and friends at the hospital for his warmth, sense of humor, and devotion to the practice of medicine. Dave was also a great teammate and a competitor. Everything he did was with passion, from his high school accomplishments as a State Champion sprinter and a standout in football and basketball, to his drive to play basketball for the University of Dayton, where his coach insisted he not miss his medical labs for basketball practice stating, "You're going to be a better doctor than a basketball player." Still, his passion for athletics continued. Dave played for St. Agatha's softball team for 35 years and won recreational football championships in Vietnam and at Ohio State. His Ohio State team, which included his sons and residents from his Department, represented Ohio State in the National Flag Football Championship five times. Playing sports, golfing, and skiing into his 60's with his kids, grandkids, and friends were some of his greatest joys. With his everlasting spirit of fun and compassion, Dave coined himself "Goofy Grandpa" when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease to alleviate as much pain as he possibly could for his grandchildren that he so dearly loved. His courage and good humor remained intact throughout his battle. Dave is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Patti Bintz Kelly; and his children and 13 grandchildren, Erin (husband, George Buzash and children, Brett and Blaize), Chris (wife, Sandy and children, David "Rex", Cate, and Riley), Matt (wife, Michelle and children, Calin, Jack, Grant, and Mya Jane), and Braden (wife, Lilian and children, Teddy, Bryn, Nate and Tessa). He is also survived by his sisters, Margie (Tom) Jester, Ellen (Roy) Crayton, Jan (Dan) Draper; and his brother, Kevin (Laurie) Kelly. And Patti's sisters, Sue (John) Burkhart, Mary Jo (Joe) Balistreri and their families. Dave was preceded in death by his parents Judge Robert and Margaret Kelly, and his sister Kathleen Kelly Denslow (Phil) and sister-in-law Janie Bintz. The family would like to thank the many friends and caregivers who defined love, compassion, patience, and dedication over the past several years. Patti thinks of all of you with the greatest respect and love. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. MONDAY at the RUTHERFORD FUNERAL HOME AT POWELL, 450 West Olentangy Street, Powell, OH 43065, (614)-792-1471. (The funeral home is located on W. Olentangy St./Powell Rd./SR 750 1/4 mile east of Sawmill Parkway.) Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2014 at ST. JOAN OF ARC CATHOLIC CHURCH, 10700 Liberty Road, Powell, OH 43065. The Reverend James Black, Celebrant. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Lewis Center, Oh. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dave's name to the Joan Fund for Head and Neck Cancer Research, www.cancer.osu.edu through the James Cancer Hospital or The Ohio State University Department of Neurology for Alzheimer's research, http://neurology.osu.edu/cognitive/alzresearchfund.html. Kelly Family,
I just heard of Dave's passing today. I'm so sorry that I wasn't able to attend Dave's celebration of life! What a great guy and equally great family! It was my privilege to have known Dave as the Olentangy footbal team doctor and to have been his and Pat's wonderful kids' high school principal! I recall once telling Dave and Pat that their family was Olentangy royalty! I can only echo that sentiment once again.

Dear Kelly Family
I spent my first day in the Operating Room with your Father as a high school student 20 years ago. I went on to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. I can't imagine how many lives he touched between all the patients and caregivers he was involved with. My sincerest sympathies

Dear Kelly family, I just learned of Dr. Kelly's passing and send my sympathy. Dr. Kelly took care of my daughter with her ear surgery about 25 years ago. She loved him and named her teddy bear after him. "Dr. Kelly" she called him and still has him. He was very influential in her life, as she also decided to become a physician. Her name is Dr. Meghan Williams. Thank you Dr. Kelly for all you have done for your patients. Thank you Kelly Family for sharing your husband, father, grandfather.

Dear Kelly family- You don't know me but I knew Dave in Vietnam. I remember him with his "Vietnam Hero" head band on entertaining us by just talking. I used to say that he had missed his calling........that he should have been a stand-up comedian......but I was wrong there! He definitely "found" where he needed to be and incorporated his humor into doing whatever he did. I am so sorry for your loss of one so special to this horrible disease. I now work in Hospice and see daily what Alzheimer's does to wonderful people. Take solace in knowing that he lived such a full life and will be remembered fondly by so many!

I want to bestow my heartfelt sympathy for a very compassionate and funny care giver. I worked with Dr. Kelly in Recovery and enjoyed his humor and so respected his talent as a great surgeon and teacher. I was fortunate to be a patient of his and 2 of my children have "better ears" for his skilled hand. He was loved as a friend and colleague and will be missed.

Chris, Sandy, Erin, Patti and Family,
We are so sorry for the loss of your wonderful father. We enjoyed meeting him at many of the boys early soccer and flag football games. May his good works and spirit live on in all you.

Kelly Family-
We recently learned Dr. Kelly passed. We have many fond memories of our time at OSU during residency. The volley ball games at your house, the flag football games, the soft ball games, the basketball games.... sounds like a sports camp. We worked hard and we played hard. Dr. Kelly had the unique ability to make work feel like play. He was an outstanding teacher, mentor, and friend to the OSU residents. We will always remember him with a big smile on his face and a sparkle in his eyes. He will be missed. Our prayers are with all of you.

How I loved the time I spent at the Kelly house, with Dr. Kelly such a part of that. The love and pride he felt for his family was palpable, even to a visitor. He's earned his glory and I pray for comfort for his family. What a remarkable man.

Though I didn't work with Dr. Kelly on a regular basis whenever I was pulled into his OR to work with him he never failed to make it enjoyable. He always treated you with respect and had a smile on his face. He was liked by everyone. My deepest sympathy.

My condolences to the entire Kelly family. I have only positive thoughts and memories of "Doc" Kelly - from playing basketball and football with him ("wait- how did you let this old guy get behind you??") ...to talking to him about the Buckeyes! I even stole his "fake pass and then do a layup" move from him.

Doc was such a caring and sweet person- he lived his life is such a positive way - he helped others and may people around him happier....a pretty good legacy.

Too many feelings to put into words. Patti & family may God console you as you pass through this time of mourning.
May this promise of God give you comfort: 1 Thess 4:13-18 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord's word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Dear Mrs. Kelly and family,

Patti and family: What a hearty and accomplished life my friend had from his beginning to now . I recall playing football in his back yard with the fence around it . The yard looked like the size of a real football field back in 1950 . Mrs. Kelly would always take care of us by offering food or drink. Dave always stood out among the crowd primarily because he was " good at everything he did ". Years have gone by but my mind is full of good memories of both of you . God Bless .
