David Wolper Obituary

WOLPER David L. Wolper, whose landmark 1977 miniseries "Roots" introduced the miniseries to television and won numerous honors including nine Emmy awards and a Peabody, has died at 82. During his lengthy career, Wolper produced the children's classic, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and demonstrated his showman instincts with New York's 1986 Statute of Liberty centennial extravaganza and the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles. Wolper started his career as "Mr. Documentary" producing highly successful documentaries such as "The Race for Space," "The Making of the President 1960" and "The World of Jacques-Yves Costeau." Mr. Wolper also produced "Welcome Back, Kotter," "Chico and the Man," and the Oscar winning film, "L.A. Confidential." Wolper died peacefully at his home in Bevery Hills, CA, Tuesday evening while watching television with his wife, Gloria. Beside his artist wife, he is survived by his half-sister, Beatrice E. Wolper of Columbus, Ohio; three children and ten grandchildren. Private services will be held.

I met Dave in 1980 when i was jst fourteen, i asked him, are you the guy who made "Roots" he replied, why yes and did you watch it, to which i said "hell yeah! and I watch Willie Wonka every chance i get. He just laughed and said, son I think youll be okay, he was a real nice guy. Ive been in the business for over 25yrs and im relatively famous, but i can say without a doubt between me Mr Dave, Mr. Rogers and Gene London, i still had faith in real people. I hope hes smiling down somewhere and his family should be very proud, oh and his wife was very, very nice to me too. God Bless and Shalom.

I will never forget the "moment" I made eye contact with Mr. Wolper during tryouts for the 1984 olympics. I was in the finals to be a placard bearer in the opening ceremonies and as I was marching in a circle I looked at Mr. Wolper and he looked at me and we both smiled at each other and I knew at that moment that I made it. His warm smile will be forever in my mind, what a wonderful man!

looking back now..i realize what a huge and privileged experience it was to work for David in that heyday of the mid-60's. he was a hard-driving boss who I didn't think at the time had much regard for my work..the 3 pictures I did for him at the time. I ended up eventually going back into TV news..where I always belonged anyway.
but years later..cruising the Delta w/ Gloria..he saw me on the news one night..detoured the boat to Sacramento..and asked me down for lunch. we ate and chatted like 2 long lost friends for hours. he opened a cabinet..and pointed to perhaps 50 or so tape dubs he had..and there were 2 of the "Hollywood and the Stars" episodes I had done..saying this cabinet contained only his most favorite work.
made my day..my life in fact.
time and the years always make things better!
you'll live on w/ me forever..David! and the impact of your work will never die!

I met Mr. Wolper in 1966; I went to his appartment to connect a stereo. He and his wife were very friendly and got a good laugh at my lack of knowledge about the television series Batman. When I was finished he asked me how long I had been working for the store I was employed by at the time and I told him it was just a part time thng as I was a senior in electronic engineering at Cal Poly Pomona. He asked me a lot of questions about school and when I told him I was working on my senior project, thesis, and that I had to get back to Pomona because I had a lot of typing to do because I was using an old manual typewriter and if I made a mistake, I had to do the page over because we were not allowed to type erasers of any kind. He told me to wait ta minute and came back and gave me his business card and a key and told me to feel free to use the IBM Sectric typewriter in his office at anytime, night or day. I indeed did use it several times and will never forget his kindness. May he rest in peace and know that I am now a retired engineer that has a wonderfully rewarding carreer.
Thank You Mr. Wolper.

I never had the pleasure of meeting David Wolper but he touched my life as a child when mom made us watch "Roots". I wish the TV stations would show it again so my grandchildren could watch it. GOD be with Davids family and know he touched many lives.

My sincere condolences to the Wolper family.
I had the honor of dealing with David, Mark and Mike's father when he was a sewing plant manager in Barnardsville, NC and I was the ILGWU business agent and again before he passed away, when we were in Hartsville,TN. He was a very nice person and fair to his employees and he would often tell me about David and Mark doing real well in the movie and TV industries and said they would go far. I always found him to be truthful and he was in relating the information about his sons. Now, he and David and other deceased family members will be re-united. May God bless the remaining family and may David Rest In Peace.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Wolper during a trip to a USC Notre Dame game in the late 90's. We had a wonderful time with him on the Mid West Alumni train and quite candidly had no idea who he was until the next day. He was a wonderful person who made our entire group feel like friends. A true tribute to Troy.

I always wondered who he was whenever I read the credits on the productions mentioned in this obituary. Now I know. What a blessing he was to the industry and yet to remain such an "every day" kind of person. He lived as he should.

My condolences to his family and friends.

In 1962 Mr. Wolper had offices near my place of work, KTLA Television Channel 5 at the Paramount Studios Lot In Hollywood. I was Assignment Editor for the Clete Roberts news program. A friend of mine worked for Mr. Wolper and one day while visiting I met the man I considered a giant in the industry. He was so kind to me, listening as I told him that I had appeared in "The Making of a President 1960" when I covered the Democratic Convention as a reporter almost as much as John F. Kennedy. He laughed and said, "The only difference is you're here in Hollywood and Mr. Kennedy is the President. Big difference." We all laughed and he went on about his business. But a few times after that we would run across each other in the parking lot or in the hallways of the old wooden buildings then home to Paramount and he would always say "Hi John, what's happening in the news today..."
David L. Wolper was a fine man and the world has lost a magical talent for telling a story.
My deepest condolences to his family.
