SSGT Hansen you meant so much to so many and I know you are looking down from above and seeing what a great mark you have left on this earth. I thank you as a Mom of a soldier you lead in battle for being such a great role model and he misses you very much. You are dearly missed by so many and have touched so many lives on your short time in this journey here on earth. I know you are up above still touching people and protecting like you are so good at doing. Thoughts and prayers are with your wife and son MJ as they are continuing in this journey with so much great knowledge and love you left with them.

I just wanted to say... Thank you my love, I appreciate all the little things you did and everything you tried to do for us. We are very blessed to be your family, and even though we did not get 10,15 or even 50 years together.... I'm thanking God today for the little while, because it was the absolute best Happiest little while we will ever have and if I ever think differently, I just need to look our son, the love we created shines right through your little Bright Eyes and he reminds me of just how lucky I was to be loved by you.And he reminds me everyday that soul mates only come once in a lifetime and when they do, you got to hold them tight, make the best of every moment, and keep them close to your heart for eternity. You and I were soul mates, and Michael is the bridge that holds us altogether. When people meet our son for the first time, it amazes me everytime how much they laugh and smile and instantly feel a connection with him... he gets that from you :-)
We had the world when we had you, and the best part is, we STILL have you. See you very soon Daddy! Michael John and I love you times infinity times anything you say! xoxoxoxo

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I way not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

For my dearest Love,
I have been keeping tracking of all the love, care and concern people have been writing on here and other sites since the beginning... I know it has taken me much longer then others to sit and write you publically, but you know as do I that writing you and daydreaming about our life has been my sole source of sanity...well that and "the boy" as you like to call him. Love is such a simple word that emcompasses so many layers of our life together. I believe it is far too simple at times, and yet a humbling word to describe us. You are my best friend and without you I feel completely lost in this big world, but Michael and I are slowing finding some gravity and beginning life again. Unpacking your belongings has been the hardest on me, and forgive me for not finishing the job just yet, but IM sure you know how life has been for us here and so IM hoping you understand. When I opened your wallet and found the ticket stub from our first date, along with the friendly's receipt from the day we got married, it brought me to tears. Just to know that we truly loved eachother, and to know that you cared so much about those moments in our life, just blows me away. I cant wait to discover what else may be lying in those boxes in the garage, but at the same time, its just a painful reminder that you arent coming home. So forgive me my love, stay near me, and help me through this part. PS- I think those boots were the best deal for you, they survived the rest of deployment,hehe.
You are and always will be a hero to so many people and I know you never believed that you made a difference in the world, but I look around and visit with friends and family and am reminded that you made a lifetime of differences to more then we could have ever thought. I remember the day you brought home the Snapping Turtle as aguard dog stand in so when you deployed you didnt have to worry about me living alone and pregnant... or the time we went digging for worms and you grabbed the whole bucket and shoved them down my pants. The times we went fishing, or how you always came back to bed in the morning just to "cuddle me up" and "kiss me up" in the morning before you left for work. You were completely right about the fact that we had never loved anyone but eachother and those that came before were nothing more then a stepping stone along the way to eachother. "BFF" is a phrase that will always make me laugh now, along with the term soulmates... Michael will always know about our silly moments together and how hard you worked to make our life wonderful. You gave me the best gift in the world... our son. There cant be a better moment in my life then when they brought me our son and you called at that moment to cry with me on the phone. I only regret you not being there to hold him and kiss him up with me... lord knows our lil half back needed his Daddy's big strong arms to hold him up hehe. But thank you for giving us your undivided attention on your leave time, I only wish our whole family could have been together. But in time, the truth will be told and Michael will understand it all. You are the best daddy a son could ask for, and the boys are forever lucky to have you as their father. They know that, and so does the rest of the world.

I could go on and on about the way we lived our life, and how we made the most out of every moment, but those who knew us understand that. I have no regrets, and I know you dont either. I love you Papa... to the moon and back.

SSG Hansen, aka "Gunny" was a great guy who always either had a story to tell or something funny to say. I was able to fight along side him on many occasions and even more memorable, was able to play wiffle ball with him on a daily basis before he was killed. We were also able to share a great day together in the Spring of 2009 when both of our wives had our kids on the same day. Great man, a great Soldier, great Leader and a great Friend. I miss ya brother.

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Dennis will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

Gerstner-McAvoy-McGowan Family

December 20, 2009

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms S/Sgt. Dennis Hansen. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Dennis. And to Dennis it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Dennis, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,353 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Dennis’ family and loved ones.

Dear Hansen Family:

I am an employee of NetJets and just heard about your son. As a mother of a soldier who will be starting his third deployment to Afghanistan in January, my heart goes out to your family. I just recently was able to visit my son in North Carolina, and he spoke so eloquently and hearfelt about his commitment and the commitment of his fellow soldiers to protect our freedom. He could have gotten out this year, but chose to rejoin to continue with his Army brothers and sisters. He asked that if anything should happen to him that I not be bitter or regret his decision -- that it was who he was and what he was meant to do. He stated that he would rather live a shorter life and fulfill his commitment than live a longer life and regret that he did not do what he feels God intended for him to do. He has two little girls, and it will be so difficult for him to leave, but he feels he is doing the best thing he can do for his family and his country. Although it is difficult at times for me to understand that level of commitment, I am proud of him and will honor his request to celebrate his life should the worst happen. I know I will be devastated, but I hope I can live up to my commitment to him as he has lived up to his commitment. I only tell you this in the hope that it can give you some measure of strength and peace in knowing that your son is a hero as I consider my son to be. They have lived a life fighting for what they believe in and for us. I will keep you in my prayers as you face this difficult time. I know you will miss him. I truly thank God for Dennis and what he has done for me, my family and our country.

Peace be with you.
