Douglas McCord Obituary

McCord Douglas Harlow McCord, died April 27, 2017 in Charlotte, North Carolina, following an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; daughters, Karen (Keith) Zabalaoui and Cynthia (Robert) Lynn; grandson, Adam Kiihr; granddaughters, Rebecca and Hannah Zabalaoui; twin sister, Carol Collier; sister-in-law, Gretchen Hirsch; and a niece and six nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Meilinger. Doug was a graduate of Randolph Macon Academy and Ohio Wesleyan University, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He served the fraternity as a member of its House Corporation for many years. He was a naval veteran, with postings in Athens, Georgia; Groton, Connecticut; and Norfolk, Virginia. He was the disbursement officer for the families of those who perished on the USS Thresher in 1963. Doug also manned a submarine tender as part of the blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Returning to Columbus, Ohio, following his naval service, Doug joined The Ohio National Bank (later PNC), serving as a vice president and manager of several offices throughout the city. He also oversaw the installation of the bank's first automatic teller machines, some of the first in the country. Doug enjoyed volunteering, especially with children, and worked in a variety of programs supporting children's learning. His other passion was golf, whether he was playing a round, working as a starter at the Ohio State University Golf Course, or lending great support the OSU Women's Golf Team. Doug realized his lifelong dream when he became a certified PGA official. A service of memory will be held at the OSU Golf Course Club House in Upper Arlington at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 9. In lieu of flowers, those who wish are invited to make a contribution in his honor to the Alzheimer's Association or to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte RegionMemorial for Douglas H. McCord, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, North Carolina, 28204.

Dear Evie,
I found this obituary online when I was hunting for you, something I've been doing without success for quite some time. I'm so sorry about Doug. Please give my love and prayers for solice to your whole family. I "lost" you when the last time I wrote to you, the letter came back. I hope, when you are feeling up to it, that you can write to me and let me know your current address so I can get in touch. My email address is still [email protected]. Sending you much love.........JoAnna
