To Polly and Amy-my sincere sympathy to you and your family. A part of my childhood grieves the loss of Ellen as she and I were such good friends and spent lots of time together during our elementary school years. I remember you and your folks with great fondness. Cherish your memories of Ellen. Fondly, Sue Rowe Haering

I'm so sorry to hear of Ellen's passing. I was a past recipient of an English Award and also served on the committee for a few years. She was such a graceful woman, always wanting to help non-profit agency employees in their quest for knowledge. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Ellen provided leadership and financial support to New Directions Career Center as it got its start in the early 1980's. Since that time she continued to be one of the Center's greatest advocates, donors and friends. She actively supported its directors and staff, and understood the importance to a small non-profit of an ongoing, engaged Board and employees. Her own personal life experience, as a young widow who re-entered the workforce while raising her four children, made her empathetic to the emotions and challenges faced by the women in transition who are served by the Center's career and employment programs. Ellen was NDCC's Board President from 1997 - 2000 (the longest term of any President) and made it her mission to help the Center grow and develop a strong, passionate, and committed Board – a legacy which carries forward today and of which she was very proud. Ellen understood the importance of creating long-term financil stability, and was instrumental in helping to establish the Center's Endowment Fund at The Columbus Foundation. Her enduring commitment to NDCC's mission resulted in improved lives for tens of thousands of women in Franklin County. Her generosity and advocacy will never be forgotten.
In addition to her role as a donor, Board member, and advocate for the Center, Ellen was my friend. She provided support and encouragement during my first “tour of duty” at NDCC from 1995-2000. During that time, Ellen served as President of our Board and she also met and married Brooks Julian, who added so much love and joy to her life. After I stepped down as Director of the Center in 2000, Ellen and Brooks and Ken and I strengthened our friendship and enjoyed many happy social times together. Before I returned to the Center in 2009, Ellen was the first person with whom I met to seek out her thoughts about the possibility of my return and to insure (if I did) that I would have her support. She was thrilled that I was considering a return and pledged to do whatever she could to help. Finally, Ellen was a mentor to me and to many other women. She was always strong, gracious, practical, and kind -- with a playful sense of humor, and a deep appreciation for family, friends, and the important things in life. I will miss her, but am forever grateful for the time and friendship we shared.
