Ellen Wiseman Julian

Julian Ellen (English) Wiseman Julian, 79, passed away peacefully in Easton, Maryland on February 15, 2013, among family. Ellen was born to the late Walter English and Marian Rose Dupuis English, October 28, 1933, in Columbus, Ohio. She graduated from Bexley High School in 1951 and from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois in 1955. After college, she returned to Columbus as a newlywed with her late husband, Charles Philip Wiseman (deceased since 1976). A longtime resident of Bexley, she cultivated remarkable and enduring friendships, participated whole-heartedly in community life, and raised four children. She worshipped and volunteered at Bexley Methodist Church. Her family cherished annual summer gatherings in Sun Valley, Idaho, which began as trips with her parents and sisters, and became a summer tradition which extended for decades, including her grandchildren and extended family. While raising her son and three daughters, her favorite things included playing bridge with her close friends, doting on her beloved Cairn Terrier, Squince, playing tennis, swimming and brunching at the Columbus County Club, sewing, and the Bexley Fourth of July parades. Graduating from Capital University's Paralegal Program in the early eighties, she worked for the Walter English Co., and then for National City Bank, retiring as an Asst. Vice President in the trust department. With her late husband, Brooks Patton Julian, she embarked on a joyous second chapter in life, marrying in September, 1996 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Worthington. Living in both Upper Arlington and Dunedin, FL, Brooks and Ellen enjoyed traveling to Africa, Bermuda, Panama, Scandinavia and spending time with their blended family of seven children. Philanthropy was a notable theme in her life. She continued her parents' legacy of giving by serving from 1996-2010 as Trustee and President of the Walter and Marian English Foundation, a Supporting Foundation of The Columbus Foundation. In 2010, she helped redesign the grant-making practices of the English Foundation so that they will continue in perpetuity. She was deeply involved with the Walter and Marian English Awards Fund, which annually grants merit awards to individuals in the social services field. In addition, she served on the Advisory Committee of The Columbus Foundation from 1997-2002. She administered a private foundation, the English Family Foundation. She was a Trustee and Chair of the Columbus Youth Foundation from 1989-2009. For the New Directions Career Center, she contributed her time, energy, resources and mentoring as Board President from 1993-1997, and as Trustee Emeritus. The Center of Science and Industry ("COSI") was dear to her heart, and throughout the years she sat on the Women's Sustaining Board, the COSI Auction Committee, the COSI on the Riverfront Campaign Committee, the Endowment Fund Board and the Advisory Council. She was a President of the Columbus Female Benevolent Society, and on the Board of Trustees of the Methodist Theological School. She was a member of a number of community organizations, including: Childhood League Board VI, Bexley Woman's Club, and Action for Children. She was Camp Fire Girls Leader for ten years, and a den mother for two. She is preceded in death by her sister Marian Rose "Rosie" Yeager, and a nephew Walter Yeager. Ellen is survived by her sisters, Amelia L. Watson (Marshall) of Albuquerque, N.M. and Polly Lassettre (Edwin) of Los Gatos, CA; her four children, Mari W. Deminski of Highlands Ranch, CO, Douglas F. Wiseman (Francesca) of Easton, MD, Constance E. Wiseman of Freeland, WA and Amie E. Brooks of Powell, OH; as well as grandchildren, Kyra, Ellen Hannah "Hannah" and Leah Deminski, Katherine Wiseman Reutersward (Simon), Emily and Elizabeth Wiseman, and Antoine LaLonde; her cousins, Elizabeth Wetherholt of Columbus, OH, Carol Boster of Pleasanton, CA and James Davis of Winston-Salem, NC; her nieces, Linda Topf, Marian Lassettre, Susan Dunlap, Marcia "Marcie" Mendoza; her nephews, Paul, Christopher and Neil Lassettre, Jeff Watson, and James and Michael Dunlap; and her step-children, Kathy Goldberg of Columbus, OH, Connie Glickman of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jeanne Julian of New Bern, NC. Family will receive friends Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Bexley Methodist Church, 2657 E. Broad Street, Bexley, Ohio 43209, with an 11:30 a.m. memorial service at the church.
