Frank Handley Obituary

HANDLEY Dr. Frank A. "Pete" Handley, age 84, of Powell, and formerly a long-time resident of Worthington Hills, passed peacefully Monday, October 19, 2009 at Columbus Alzheimer's Care Center surrounded by his loving family. Born in Portsmouth, Oh. to the late Frank A. and Grace M. Handley, Pete was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1942. A veteran of the United States Navy during World War II, he served as a Pharmacist Mate, 1st Class. After the war, Pete entered The Ohio State University and graduated in 1950 with his Bachelor of Science degree. While at Ohio State, he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Pete graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery in 1954. He served his internship at Columbus Doctors Hospital and entered into private practice in 1955. Dr. Handley belonged to the Ohio Osteopathic Association and the American Osteopathic Association. He served as Chief of Staff at Doctors Hospital and also served on the Board of Directors. After a dedicated and distinguished 44-year career, Dr. Handley retired from practice in 1999. In addition to his parents, Pete is preceded in death by his brother Claude E. "Herb" Handley. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosemary; daughters, CPO Jill Ann Handley, USN (Retired) of Monterey, Calif., Michele (John) Altenhofen of Bailey, Colo. and Amy (Dan) Dankowski of Pickerington; grandchildren, Dustin Altenhofen, Alex Dankowski and Sarah Dankowski; sister, Betty Zuhars-Zehala of Upper Arlington; sister-in-law, Rebecca Handley of Gahanna; and many nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. THURSDAY at the RUTHERFORD FUNERAL HOME at POWELL, 450 West Olentangy St., Powell, Oh. 43065, (614)-792-1471. (The funeral home is located on West Olentangy St./Powell Rd./SR 750 1/4 mile east of Sawmill Parkway.) A Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m. SATURDAY, October 24, 2009 at the funeral home and family will receive friends before the service beginning at 1 p.m. Pastor Jim Blankenship will be officiating. Private burial will be observed by the family. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to consider memorial contributions to: Central Ohio Alzheimer's Association, 3380 Tremont Road, Columbus, Oh. 43221 or Odyssey Hospice, 540 Officecenter Place, Suite 100, Gahanna, Oh. 43230-5317, in Pete's memory. Dr. Handley was our family doctor from 1966 until he retired. He delivered our first born (Andy) in 1967 at Doctors Hospital. He was a very special person and Doctor. We will never forget him.

We are so sorry for the world's loss of a wonderful man & fantastic doctor. He took care of our entire family (3 generations actually) for decades. He was loved for his sense of humor, expertise, great bedside manner & his straight -forward attitude. There will never be another doctor like him. He will be sincerely missed.
