Helene Patitsas Obituary

PATITSAS Helene Patitsas, 74, of Columbus, Ohio, passed from this earthly life to eternal life on October 2, 2011. Helene fell asleep in the Lord surrounded by family after a long struggle with renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer). She was preceded in death by her parents Peter George Stamos and Mary Drevas Stamos, and her brother George Peter Stamos. Helene is survived by her husband of 54 years, George Patitsas; her children, Father Doctor Christos (Katina) of Huntingdon, PA., Peter (Effie) of Upper Arlington, Father Philemon (Maria) of Charlotte, NC, Father Paul (Katerina) of Auckland, New Zealand, Maria (Constantine) Kayafas of Wheeling, WV and Professor Timothy of Boston, Mass. She is also survived by her sisters, Theodora (John) Halliday of Amelia Island, FL. and Calliope (Anthony) Makridis of Brooklyn, NY and Georgia Stamos of Brooklyn, NY; brother-in-law, Spyros Patitsas of Athens, Greece; as well as 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was born Helene Stamos on April 30, 1937 in New York, NY. Helene graduated from Public School 154 in Brooklyn and Prospect Heights High School in Brooklyn in 1954 and received her B.A. in Education from Kent State University in 1991. Helene worked at the American Bible Society in New York for six years and at Kent State University for 23 years. Helene was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Akron for more than 40 years, where she was the director of the Greek Dance Group for 20 years, president of the PTO, GOYA advisor, a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society, a Sunday school teacher, proud member of the sewing club and many other organizations. During the last 11 years, Helene was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Columbus, sometimes putting on puppet shows for the children at the Cathedral. Helene was proud that her children shared her love for the Greek Orthodox Faith and they serve the church - three as Greek Orthodox Priests, one as Professor of Ethics at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, one as Sunday School director and director of the Greek Dance Group, and one as a parish council member and Greek teacher. The family is very grateful to Fr. Panteleimon Maillis for being at Helene's side continually during the last nine months and the love and support of the Annunciation communities in Columbus and Akron. Helene is especially grateful to her husband George for lovingly taking care of her and being by her side throughout her illness. Funeral Service 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2011 at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio 42315, where friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to service Thursday. Trisagion Service 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Burial Resurrection Cemetery. Dear Patitsas Family, I was sitting at my computer looking on Facebook to find your mom and was sad to find that she had passed away. I worked with her at KSU probably back in 1983 while I attended school there. I remember meeting Pete, Tim, and Marie and perhaps Paul, as sometimes you would stop in to see her. I admired your faimly and the way you were so close with one another. You all seemed so successful in your career paths and that was something your mom was so proud of. I loved listening to stories about your family. I learned a great deal from her about family. You are lucky kids to have had her as your mom. She was proud of you all!
Sincerely, Mary Sandy

Dear Patitsas Family,
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Pasitsas. Growing up in the Akron church, Mrs. Patitsas was an adult that had an impact on my life. For many years she taught me how to Greek Dance. Even with many children of her own, she took the time to teach other people's children Greek dance and share her enthusiasm for the culture and dance. Now, raising a family of my own, I can truly appreciate her work and dedication. I know you all know how great of a mother she was and I wanted you to know we all also knew how great she was and will miss her. I left Akron a long time ago and have not seen you for many years. But the memories I have from growing up around such a wonderful, God-centered family like the Patitsas family will stay with me forever. God Bless You and may her memory be eternal. Love, Deme Koutrodimos Lewis

Dear Uncle George and Cousins:

I loved Aunt Helene with all my heart and soul - and I know she is resting at peace now. I also know that my dad is giving her the biggest bear hug right now and letting her know how much he truly loves her eventhough he gave her a tough time growing up as brother and sister. My fondest memories with all of you was when my dad said let's go to Ohio and we jumped into the car and traveled hours from Brooklyn to visit you all!! Aunt Helen and Uncle George always gave me the biggest hugs and kisses - and I knew I was loved.
I love and miss you all - and please know that I am praying with you today and tomorrow and wishing a blessed farewell to my sweet Aunt.

With love,
Maria Haritopoulos

We would like to offer to the entire Patitsas family our deepest sympathies for Mrs. Patitsas. Mrs. Patitsas was like a 'matriarch' of our church. We have such fond memories of being taught how to dance Greek! Mrs. Patitsas always was so loving, caring and beautiful. She was the life of the party - always had us laughing, making sure that we all had a good time. She will certainly be missed. All of you have our condolences for such a fine 'mother' to all of us. You are like family & we all love you.

Mrs. Patitsas will certainly be missed.

May God give you comfort in knowing that she is resting in peace, above.
+May her memory be eternal.+

With deepest sympathy & respect,

Dear Fr. Philemon:
Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of your mother. May the Lord rest the soul of your dear mother and may the Lord grant you and your family comfort, strength, encouragement, long life, good health and all of His blessings. Below are some verses from scripture that I hope will be of comfort.
To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted; Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18

With best wishes, love and prayers

Deacon George N Politis

My thoughts and prayers are with the Patitsas family clan during this difficult time. It was my honor to know Helene and it is a tribute to her on how involved she was in Church life. She was a very loving person and always made every one feel at home at events that were held at the house in Kent. May her Memory be Eternal!

I will always remember Aunt Helene's infectious laugh, positive always upbeat attitude and they way she ruled her household with the proverbial iron fist. She and Uncle George raised a beautiful loving family in their own blessed image. I hope that she, my dad, Nana and Papou are dancing together in heaven. May her memory be eternal and she be granted eternal life.... "Peter Stamos - George and Lauren.

When I think of summer camp, I think of the Patitsas family. When we moved from DC to Akron, I think of Mrs. Patitsas offering puppet shows during the Akron Greek Festival and at the premier Annunciation St. Nicholas Breakfast.
It was a distinct honor to have known her and to have intertwined with this spiritual family in my life.
Memory Eternal.

Dear Mr. Patitsas, Fr. Chris, Fr. Philemon, Pete, Fr. Paul, Maria, and Tim,

She was such a presence in all of our youth programs.

We pray God give rest to her soul and comfort to all of you! Memory Eternal!
