(Roxanne) of San Diego, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Kathryn, Zane, Avery, Mikhail, Samantha and Ryan. Henry earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. He came to The Ohio State University in 1949, where he completed a doctorate in 1953, was appointed Professor of Geography, and later a professor in the School of Public Administration. He retired in 1994 after 41 years of service at the University. He was Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Queensland, Australia, 1957, and as a Battelle Memorial Institute Fellow in 1972-1973. His major interest throughout life was economic development, particularly relating to Ohio and especially Columbus. His work was published in professional and popular journals, and several books including Industrial Development, Concepts and Principles (1974), and Columbus: A Personal Geography, (2000). As editor, he revised Erich Zimmerman's classic work Introduction to World Resources, which appeared in English, Japanese and Spanish versions. His courses attracted future business leaders in Central Ohio and the region. He imparted his wealth of knowledge about Ohio, especially during field trips around the region and within the city, with hundreds of students and others over the span of several decades. Henry served the Association of American Geographers (AAG) as Editor of "The East Lakes Geographer" from 1963-72. In 2009, he was to have been recognized for his long and valued service by the AAG at its annual meeting. Henry served the community, being appointed by both Democrats and Republicans to several boards and committees, including the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board and the Ohio Steel Industry Advisory Board. He was a founding member and served as President of the Columbus Landmarks Foundation during its early years, and was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church downtown, including past service as Moderator. Dear Mrs. Hunker and Family,

I was a student of Dr. Hunker's urban studies during the mid-seventies. He was a great teacher and very interested in us, his students. Although my career took another path, I have never forgotten his lectures regarding the natural resources of the State of Ohio, one of them being Lake Erie. Our discussions of plentiful fresh water and the future demand for it is becoming a reality.

My sympathy to all of you.

Sincerely,

Jo Ann Keirsey

Dear Mrs. Hunker, Erich, and family members,
Many years ago I had the pleasure of meeting you and your husband and I immediately felt like a long-lost daughter. What a beautiful couple the two of you made and 64 years of marriage is the testament. Erich has been a dear friend of mine for many years and I have always been able to tell that he is a good son. His parents did an outstanding job of raising him. I know that this is a tremendous loss for you and your family and I hope that you can feel the embrace and the love that comes to you all the way from Oklahoma City

Barbara and I were greatly saddened to learn of Henry's death.I know he was a wonderful husband and father and there is little we can say to soften this great loss to you and your family.
As a professor, Henry was a great asset to the geography program at OSU and to the entire university community. He served with great distinction. Our thoughts and kindest regards are with you and your family during this time of great sadness.

Dr. Henry Hunker was one of my favorite professors. He had a positive impact on the lives of thousands of students. For many of us fortunate to know Henry over the years, we benefitted from his intellect, passion, and devotion to his profession at both the university as well as throughout Central Ohio. I considered Henry to be a good friend and feel fortunate to have been his student over 40 years ago and his friend subsequently. My sincere sympathy to his family.

Dear Mrs. Hunker: I was fortunate enough to be a student in a number of your husband's geography classes in the late 1970's and early 1980's. After all of these years, I still remember a field trip that he hosted through Ohio as we studied the state's disappearing manufacturing base and strategized on solutions to these difficult problems. I never became a geographer but still treasure your husband's love for teaching. Please accept my condolences for your loss--he was a good man! Steven S. Nolder
