James Smith Obituary

SMITH James Ervin Smith, age 75, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at home surrounded by family. Born August 31, 1935 in Knoxville, Tennessee to Hollee Dodd. He began serving his country in 1952 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and a National Defense Service Medal for his service. After discharge, Jim attended Bliss College in Columbus, Ohio to study business administration. He then joined the U.S. Postal Service as a Clerk/Carrier and was promoted several times, ultimately to a D&D Expediter and Staff Trainer. He retired from the Postal Service in 1991 with more than 30 years of distinguished service. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Jo Ann Guess Smith, his parents Hollee and Furman Lee Dodd Sr. and sister Gwen Kahee. Jim is survived by his devoted children, Stewart Aaron (Keena) Smith and Jennifer Eileen Smith; and grandchildren, Keeanna and Stewart Alexander Smith. He was a remarkable and exemplary man and will be greatly missed. Homegoing Services 11 a.m., Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Love Zion Baptist Church, 1459 Madison Ave., where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the start of services.
