Jane Case-Smith Obituary

Case-Smith Jane Case-Smith, EdD, OTR/L, FAOTA, 60, of Powell, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at home. She was a Professor and Director of the Occupational Therapy Division of the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University. During her tenure the MOT program had been ranked as one of the best in the nation. Jane received the Ohio State University Distinguished Service Award, and was elected to the American Occupational Therapy Association's Roster of Fellows and the American Occupational Therapy Foundation's Academy of Research. She was an internationally respected author, lecturer and researcher in the area of pediatric OT. She was much loved by her students, colleagues, friends and family. Survived by husband, Greg Smith; father, Rev. Walter Case; beloved sons, David and Stephen; stepsons, Dr. Matthew Smith, Christopher (Greta) Smith; precious grandson, Declan Smith; brothers, Walter "Scott" (Melissa) Case, John (Jill) Case and Andrew (Rachel) Case; brothers-in-law, Michael (Nora) Smith and Mark (Linda) Smith; sister-in-law Rev. Moria Ahearne (Forrest); nieces, Jenny, Abby, Alison, Hannah, Carolyn, Sarah, Kelly (Andrew); nephews, Michael Jr. (Meghan), Ryan, Andrew and Michael; great nieces, Aine, Kathleen, Susanna; and special family friends, Rev. Robert and Edith Rasmussen. Visitation will from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. on SATURDAY, August 2, 2014 at the RUTHERFORD FUNERAL HOME AT POWELL, 450 West Olentangy St.(Powell Rd./St.Rt. 750/1/4 mile east of Sawmill Pkwy.), Powell, OH 43065, (614-792-1471). Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. SUNDAY at LIBERTY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 7080 Olentangy River Rd., Delaware, OH 43015. A reception will follow at the church. I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Jane Case-Smith. I did not know she had health challenges. When listening to her at a UW-Madison training, I was in awe of the humility with which she presented her astounding work, her compassion for the children she spoke of, and her general positive spirit. I was so very sorry that she could not live to fulfill everything she wanted to do. I am so sad for the family to have lost such an awesome loved one. Praying for you all.

The very sad news reached the Netherlands. Jane worked with us towards the Amsterdam Paediatric OT conference in 2012 and provided us all with two inspirational presentations. Her work supports paediatric OT's all over the world and will live on through her publications and books. Our deep condolences to family, friends and colleagues.

I was so fortunate to have Jane for many classes and to have a seminar with her when she arranged a tuition-free pediatric internship for some of us.
