Curtis Dr. Jerry L. Curtis, March 26, 1937-March 6, 2017. A memorial service for Dr. Jerry L. Curtis, 79, of Utica, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2017 at LAW-BAKER FUNERAL HOME, 34 N. Main St., Utica with Pastor Daniel Fullen officiating. Friends may call 1-3 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2017 at the funeral home. Dr. Curtis passed away March 6, 2017 at Selma Markowitz Center, Newark. He was born March 26, 1937, in Salt Lake City, Utah to the late Eldon W. and Emma (Peterson) Curtis. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He earned his Ph.D. in French from the University of Washington in 1971. He retired from The Ohio State University after 25 years as an Associate Professor of French. He is survived by the love of his life of 24 years, Shirley J. Curtis; children, Larissa Madrid of Salt Lake City, UT, Clinton Rardon, Michael (Jayme) Rardon, and Michelle (Bill) Belt; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son Johnny Curtis, three brothers Stanley, Don and Doug Curtis. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, P.O. Box 430, Newark, OH 43058-0430. Jerry and I were in graduate school together (and office mates) at the University of Washington in the 1960's. We remained friends for the rest of his life. I affirm that he was perhaps the best friend I ever had; he looked after me and my interests and helped me in his hard times. He invited me to write and speak about Lucette des Vignes, the French writer he promoted vigorously. I feel privileged to have known this sterling, wonderful man.

A truly great professor, and a master of his subject and professional, whose lessons were burned into my memory, and whose insight was masterful. I think of him still regularly as I open any French text, and am thankful to almighty God that he and I crossed paths, with his imprint left.

Thank you, Dr Curtis. It has been 9 years, but thank you.

My deepest sympathy Shirley. I always enjoyed talking with you both when you visited the Oncology office. I loved talking with Jerry and listening to his philosphy on life. He always made the best of a bad situation. He will truely be missed by you and many others. Shirley I will always remember your smile and support you gave Jerry during his illness. The members of the Department of French and Italian at Ohio State, Jerry's home department, are saddened by the news of his passing. Jerry was a prolific scholar and a dedicated teacher, and he will be missed by his students and colleagues. We are glad to know that Jerry has such large family and hope that his wife, children, and grandchildren may take comfort in one another. Our best wishes to you all.
