I can remember as a "preteen" of meeting the Hammond family. The very first opportunity I had back then was to babysit for Gerry. Throughout the years I learned so much about being involved in community events at such a very young age because of Jerry. I am so thankful for that today as I am still carrying out a part of his legacy.
My prayers goes out to the family and may God bless each of you.

One did not have to be in the political gym politics to appreciate Jerry Hammond as a man of compassion and soul. I was pleased in the late 70's to meet Jerry and call him friend. He helped a single white divorced mother of two get the assistance I never knew available to help my children and their mother survive the heartbreak of being on their own. My thoughts, prayers and sympathies to his family he was the best and may he always rest in peace. And Jerry I never told anyone else I was from Ann Arbor!!! Woody was enough...Hugs my friend. And forever thankful..

My condolences to the Hammond family: Jerry Hammond was a true humanitarian. I resigned from the state leaving reinstateable. When trying to go back to the agency I was denied. I scheduled an appointment to meet with Mr. Hammond about my issue. He didn't allow me to meet with one of his constituents un- like most politicians he meet with me himself he only ask that I show proof that I was a registered voter. When explaining my situation Mr. Hammond picks up the telephone contacted the director over the agency and I was employed with the state within thirty days..For this I feel it was an honor and privilege to have know such First Black President of the Columbus City Council. Farewell and God bless gone but not forgotten.
