Joette Greenstein Obituary

Greenstein Joette Greenstein, died of a broken heart on June 28, 2017 at the age of 85, the day after she buried her soulmate, Dr. Julius S, Greenstein. Joette, the daughter of Stanley Malczewski and Ann (Zajda) was born in Chicago, IL on October 25, 1931. She graduated from Lourdes High School in Chicago, then attended both the University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She married Julius on August 23, 1954 and they began their long journey in academia starting at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and culminating with a 30-year tenure at Ohio State University Newark and Central Ohio Technical College, where her husband was Dean Director of the former and President of the latter. Ever active as a First Lady, Joette also did volunteer work at Licking Memorial Hospital, but her main priority besides her husband was raising her five children and supporting them in their many activities including ballet, music, AAU swimming, basketball and track. In addition to being a devoted wife to her husband and children, Joette Greenstein was an avid reader, a film aficionado and a very creative and giving individual. Along with her husband, they supported a number of charities throughout their lives and created one of their own The Dr. Julius S. and Joette Greenstein award for the OSU-Newark Campus. Joette is survived by her two sisters, Wanda Johnson and Janet Scheckel; her five children, Abigail Sewall, Jodi Insana (Dave), Jay Greenstein, Blake Greenstein and Dr. Joette Greenstein (Paul Garland); and six grandchildren, Aaron Sewall, Nicholas and Joseph Insana, Hunter Primmer, Hayden Garland and Sydney Greenstein. She also leaves nephews, Dr. Arvid (Anne) Johnson III, Keith (Linda) Johnson, Thomas (Yoko) Scheckel and Mark Greenstein; as well as grand nieces and nephews, Christopher, William, Stephen, Samantha and Kelly Johnson. Service will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2017, which would have been the 90th birthday of her beloved husband Julius, starting at 10 a.m. at BRUCKER & KISHLER FUNERAL HOME, 985 N. 21st Street, in Newark, OH. Following the morning service, interment will be at Dayton National Cemetery at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Julius S. and Joette Greenstein Award, recognizing deserving individuals at the OSU-Newark Campus. How sad about your parents. We so enjoyed them as neighbors for many years and had many visits with them, especially jolleta when she took her walks. Both so nice and special pair. My sincere sympathy. Carole McPeek Pembroke Rd.

We send our most sincere condolences to the Greenstein family on the passing of Julius and Joette. What a remarkable couple. We remember their love of life, and incomparable gift giving and sharing of their time. They were wonderful, supportive friends of my parents, and we remember them with great fondness. They were truly devoted to their family and their friends, and they will be missed.
