John Karshner White age 93, Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Mother McCroy Manor. Formerly of Galena, Ohio. Graduate of Logan High School class of 1942. Graduate of OSU College of Pharmacy class of 1949. Veteran World War II US Army Air Corp. He established White's Pharmacy in 1951 where he loved being a merchant, pharmacist to the community, and later in life as the "official" greeter. He thought of his employees and customers as family. Preceded in death by wife of 50 years, Mary Jean White; parents Robert and Phyllis White; sister Virginia Franz; brother, Noel White. Survived by daughter, Martha (Charles) Hill of Biltmore Lake, NC; sons, John R. (Virginia Ellen) White of Columbus, OH, Mark White of Westerville, OH, Peter White of Galena, OH; grandchildren, Katie (David) Southard, Nicholas (Katie) White, Haley White, Mitchell White; great grandchildren, Ben, Oliver, Sylvia and Walter; sister, Nancy Hartmann. Memorial visitation will be held Sunday, September 17, 2017 1-4 PM EVANS FUNERAL HOME 4171 E. Livingston Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Innis Wood Metro Garden. www.evansfuneralhome.net

I am sorry for your family's loss. White's Pharmacy was an important landmark in my childhood when I would walk the two blocks down Livingston Avenue to spend my $1 allowance on a teen magazine and a Hershey's bar. Then in my late teens and early college years, Mr. White had hired me to work in the pharmacy and Hallmark gallery. He employed three Thornton kids - Joan, Jack and myself - and several of my friends and soon-to-be friends during those years. I remember a lot of work expectations but also many laughs and a feeling of belonging around so many caring adults. I loved Mr. White's collection of old medical equipment and the ever-shrinking Hershey bars. Who could forget those fantastic Christmas parties when we drew names and had to write and share a poem about the person and then enjoyed delicious food served by his lovely wife? I've posted a photo of five of us who worked at White's Pharmacy many years ago and remain in touch. I hope the memories you have and learn of your father/grandfather will comfort you during this sad time and then embrace you forever. x

Please accept my sincere sympathy in the loss of your father (grandfather). I have such fond memories of Mr White. White's Pharmacy was the "Candy Store" for me growing up as a young girl. I was thrilled when I was old enough to walk to his store by myself and even more thrilled when Mr White gave me a job in high school. He was my first teacher in customer service and I'm so grateful for everything he taught me! One of my fondest memories of course is the Christmas party he and Mrs White hosted for the employees at their home. What a great man!

Mr. White, has been a steadfast fixture to the South and East Sides of Columbus. His pharmacy has been an institution in our city. Whenever we wanted to know something of medicine, pharmacy, health issues, John was a trusted source. I so enjoyed seeing him in the store and hearing his many stories and memories and sharing his past life and mine in south Columbus. He was an old fashioned business man, who loved his work and his customers. My mother trusted only John White. God be with you, John.
