Joseph Byrne Obituary

Byrne, Joseph
1932 - 2021
Our dear sweet "Papa Joe" left us to join Jesus Christ in Eternity. Joe was the fifth child of Mary Fath and Peter Byrne. Joe attended Aquinas College High School and served in the Korean War for two years earning the CIB award. He began his work career as a journeyman plasterer, as his father did. He owned the Murphy's Popcorn Co. for many years. He married Sally Graham and had seven children. He was a dedicated parishioner of Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Peace Catholic Churches. He was a Crusillo member and enjoyed serving breakfast for new members who were served green pancakes. He was a proud and active member of the Shamrock Club. "Jumpin' Joe Byrne" was elected as an officer and served as the 1980 President for the Club. Joe also was a member of GAC, the Flytown Club, and enjoyed volunteering with the Picnic at the Pops series. He hosted and supported many events for a local Parents Without Partners Chapter. Joe was passionate about his family, golf, Mercedes Benz, OSU Buckeyes, coins, birds, airplanes, and the moon. Since August 2020 Kemper House of Worthington was his home. While there he regained his independence and was loved by the staff/residents and his family. In all things, Joe sought active purpose, sacrifice, and service to his fellow humans bringing humor, joy, and grace with him wherever he went. Preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary Katherine and Ann Cox, (Bill), brother Murdith (Dort), and the mother of his children Sally Byrne Long. Survived by his sister Francis Rita Clear, his two sister-in-laws Dorothy Byrne and Judith Pishitelli, his children; Juliellen Byrne (Neil Brown), Christopher Byrne (Molly), Amy Larsen, Mary King (Kelley), Jennifer Hauenstein (Dennis), John Byrne, and Colby Byrne (Heather), and 34 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the family will be having private services and no calling hours will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to his beloved Shamrock Club or Kemper House Worthington. Arrangements completed by EGAN-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 403 East Broad Street. Joe was a wonderful man. He was my Snack Vendor when I came on with new ownership at the Bier Stube in 1980. Being from Clintonville we shared many many stories. In 1997 I became the 3rd owner of Murphy Popcorn, working out of the Say Avenue garage until that property was sold. Later I would run into Joe at common accounts while he was cleaning taps. Always turned into long reminiscing stories. So much fun! Joe was extremely good to me and for that I will be eternally thankful. God bless the entire Byrne family!!

I have so many found memories of sweet Joe Byrne. He was THE most fun dad in the neighborhood. When I would spend the night with Jenny he would sing us Irish lullabies before bedtime. Joe would often let the kid's in the neighborhood hop into his popcorn truck and drive us down the street until he reached his home. He referred to my sister Trish as "Ralph" after our father, whom he knew since childhood. When I was a bartender at Rocky's Cafe he cleaned the tap lines for the restaurant. It was always the highlight of my week when he would come in. He referred to me as "Kid" or "Sweet Sarah Jones!" Such a huge compliment coming from one of the sweetest men on the planet. I also vividly remember the Shamrock he had painted on his driveway for Saint Patrick's Day. Joe helped to raise an amazing and unique group of children who I will cherish until the day I die. He took life by the hand and taught it how to live. He will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
