June Townsend Obituary

TOWNSEND Dr. June H. Townsend, 79, of 75 Hale Street (formerly of 25 Lakeview Place), Wilmington, Ohio, died 4:58 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2006 at Wilmington Nursing & Rehabilitation Residence. Her husband, Horace R. "Bus" Townsend Jr., preceded her in death October 17, 2001. They were married September 7, 1947. Dr. Townsend was born September 2, 1926 in Charleston, West Virginia, daughter of the late Lawrence Hobart and Naomi Jane Robinson Hickman. She was a graduate of Dunbar High School in West Virginia. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Wilmington College. She received three Master of Arts, one from Xavier University, one from Wright State University, and one from The Ohio State University. She received her PhD from The Ohio State University. Dr. Townsend began her career teaching music, Spanish, and English in the Martinsville schools. She went on to teach Spanish and English at Leesburg High School; music at the New Vienna schools; Spanish at The Ohio State University; and finally Spanish and global studies at Wilmington College. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and the Modern Language Association. She was a member of the Wilmington Friends Meeting and a former member of the Brush and Pen Club and Snow Hill Country Club. She was the founder of the Spanish Club at Leesburg High School and Wilmington College, and a former coach of the Leesburg High School Drill Team. Dr. Townsend is survived by two sons, Thomas Lawrence (Mary) Townsend of Dayton, Ohio and Christopher Randolph (Melissa) Townsend of Kennesaw, Georgia; a daughter, Timi Jane Townsend of Hilliard, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Connie Townsend of Wilmington, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Jessica Ray (Brian) Puckett, Abigail June Bills, Nick Townsend Wilson, Jason Townsend Wilson, Betsey Townsend, Anna Townsend, Grace Townsend, Kaleigh Townsend, and Benjamin Townsend; and four great-grandchildren, Erik Daniel Blair, Patricia Rose Brister, Horace Raymond Philip Brister, and Sophia Poppy Brister. In addition to her husband and parents, a son, Horace Raymond "Ray" Townsend, is preceded in death. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006 at the REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South Street, Wilmington, Ohio with Ann Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Martinsville I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2006 and from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Community Care Hospice, P.O. Box 123, Wilmington, Ohio 45177.
