Laurence Kubat Obituary

Kubat, Laurence J.
1938 - 2018
Surrounded by his loving wife, Patricia, his three children, his five grandchildren, and his extended family, Laurence J. Kubat passed away on February 1, 2018 in Columbus, Ohio. Larry was born in 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio. In his youth, Larry sold programs during Browns and Indians games at The Cleveland Stadium. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Cleveland, he carried on a family tradition and joined the United States Navy. He served on the USS Tripoli in 1958 as part of the skeleton crew that sailed the carrier from Pensacola to New Orleans in order for the carrier to be decommissioned. He then served on the USS Intrepid as its quartermaster from 1958 to 1959. After the Navy, Larry worked for Ohio Bell until he retired in 1994. In 1966, Larry married his beautiful bride, Patricia. They had three wonderful children: Timothy Kubat, Denise Kubat Houston, and Stacey Kubat Petz; and five beautifully talented grandchildren: Justin, Sydney, Cade, Mackenzie, and Madison. They were married for 52 wonderful years. Larry built a treasure trove of memories with his wife and his children. However, his grandchildren always held a special place in his heart. Whether it was baseball, musical performances, track, soccer, competitive cheerleading, or dancing, he was their biggest supporter. In 2014, Larry and Patricia took a trip with their grandchildren to NYC to visit the USS Intrepid so he could pass his appreciation of his ship as his legacy onto all of his grandchildren. Larry was an active member of the Knights of Columbus in Green Valley, Arizona, and Powell, Ohio, the Men's Club of St. Joan of Arc, the National Thunderbird Club of Northern Ohio, and the USS Tripoli Association/USS Intrepid Association. Calling hours will be held 1pm to 3pm and 5pm to 7pm on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at RUTHERFORD FUNERAL HOME AT POWELL, 450 W. Olentangy St, Powell, Ohio. A mass will be held Monday, February 5, 2018 at St. Joan of Arc, 10700 Liberty Rd, Powell, Ohio. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Larry was a delight to be around. He was openly proud of his wife and family. Such a wonderfully old fashioned guy who was such a success in our crazy modern world.

To the family of Larry:
I met Larry about three or four years or so ago, when he brought his yellow T-Bird to Wholly Joe's on Thursday's. I will pass his obituary on to our car gang. Being originally from Cleveland and being in the Navy, we had a number of common discussions. Take care,
