I visited Gene's home often with Betty, June and Ricky. My husband and I watched June's children, Jennifer and Billy while they were in Greece. Soon after June and Bart returned, June found out she was pregnet for Jason! Gene was very happy. I loved him. He seemed very easy going and Betty was very feisty, and an excellent ice skater!

So sorry to hear about Gene Slagle's passing. I always remember his good nature and looks. I have been frantically looking for June, his daugher. I was formerly Cheryl Shilling, long, good friend of hers. I am currently living in Charlotte NC. Phone is 980 207-0123 and email: [email protected]. I visit Columbus each year. And, we have a 50th Linden McKinley class reunion this July 7, 20. Hope June, Ricky and Betty are all well. Please return message and advise how I can reach June. My condolences!!

My uncle Gene was always a hero in my eyes and has remained so to this day. As most folks know he had been severely wounded in southeastern, France in 1945, but he did not let that dampen his spirit or drive to succeed...and he did succeed. He was smart, kind, and had a wonderful sense of humor. I remember my cousin Rick and me spending many hours fishing with him on Hoover reservoir. My uncle epitomized The Greatest Generation and he was a great and positive influence in my life. I know that the Lord has a special American Legion Hall for him to join in Heaven. He will be missed but never forgotten.
