Mark Schell Obituary

SCHELL Mark E. Schell, 48, of Grove City, went home to be with his Lord on February 22 , 2009 with his family by his side. Mark was born March 4, 1960 in Columbus. He graduated from Bishop Ready High School in 1978 where he excelled academically, was captain of the football team and finished as a state placer and state runner up in wrestling. He earned a B.S. in Accounting from John Carroll University; then attended Capital University Law School for two years. At John Carroll, Mark wrestled under Coach Tony DeCarlo and earned the distinction of "All American" his senior year. Mark also enjoyed rugby and made many friendships through his playing days with Scioto Valley and the Midwest Select Rugby Team. Mark was first and foremost an exemplary husband and father. This past October, he and his wife Becky celebrated 25 years of friendship and marriage. For his daughters, Lindsay and Lauren, Mark provided unconditional love and support. As Chief Financial Officer of The Robert Weiler Company for over 11 years, Mark enjoyed a deep and abiding friendship with Bob and Skip Weiler and the entire Weiler family. With a servant's heart, Mark lived his faith through action. He coached and mentored young wrestlers for over 20 years, at Bishop Ready and then at Pickerington. His purple wrestling shoes hang in the Pickerington wrestling room as a reminder to young men that hard work and determination produce champions. He also gave of his time tutoring students and was recognized for over 12 years of service delivering Meals on Wheels. Mark enjoyed the simple things of life--riding his motorcycle, smoking a cigar, grilling with his dog Schellby, taking walks--always enjoying life. Mark was a standard bearer for honor and integrity. He will be deeply missed. Survived by his wife, Becky; two beautiful daughters, Lindsay and Lauren; father and mother, Melvin and Leona Schell; sister, Mary Jo (Dave) Herrala; sister, Joyce (Rick) Brown; sister, Diana (Rick) Winel; brother, Brian (Kate) Schell; brother, Allan (Rhonda) Schell; sister-in-law, Deborah (Roger) McCoy; brother-in-law, Greg (Mary Joe) Pell; sister-in-law, Penny Pell; many nieces and nephews and many many friends. Becky, you may not remember me but I worked with Mark when he worked for the Tracy's. As others have said, I was shocked to read about his passing. He was the epitomy of health and it was a shock to me when I learned about this. I printed out his obituary the day I read it and have it posted on my cubicle wall at work. Therefore, I see him daily and it is a reminder to me to live each day like it may be my last. Minimize the daily drama that adds stress and seek what happiness and beauty God has provided for us. Mark was a gentle giant and it was always amazing to me that someone with such a calm personality could be such a successful competitive athlete! Words can not probably describe the void you have from losing Mark - but i'm sure you have one heck of a guardian angel looking over you and your daughters! Sending a much belated "deepest condolences" on your loss...Bonnie (Spink) Clucus

Joyce and Rick,

I cannot fathom the pain and grief of losing a brother and friend like Mark. In you both I have always seen genuine love for your family and I know that is what sustains us all in life. Mark was an intense and dedicated young man back in the days at Bishop Ready when I knew him. From his later achievements in life it is evident that his deeply rooted faith led him in all that he did. There are few men who have the leadership skills and ability to have others follow him so readily. Mark had those qualities. If, once more, we follow his lead we'll all meet again on the other side. I am humbled to have known him. Peace be with you both and your entire family.

I was so sad to learn of Mark's passing. I had the pleasure and privilege of working with Mark on behalf of MBD Benefits, Inc. when he handled the Health Insurance programs for Robert Weiler Company. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace, Amen.

Becky,

Mark was a very special guy, and I guess we will never know why God takes some who are truly kind, loving and always giving at such a young age, while others remain. However, what we do know is that Mark had a profound affect on the lives he touched in his short 48 years. If we measure our life by all that we do for others and not by the years we are here on earth, then Mark has lived a full life, and we can all be thankful we had the opportunity to know him. Mark will live on forever in your heart and soul and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. I pray that God will keep you in the palm of his hand as you heal from your loss.

With Love,
Charlotte

With a heavy heart, I pass on my thoughts and prayers to you all.

My most fond memories of Mark are growing up at St. Stephen's, where he was a role model in so many ways for me and many others. His strength was humble, kind, and true.

May you find peace in your many fond memories and strength in one another.

There are so many memories from CCL tournaments to my first weekend at JCU to senior week and graduation. We packed a lot of great times and good friendships in those few years. The kind that last a lifetime. Mark was in the center of it all, though he never realized he was the one that drew us together (and kept us sane in many moments of insanity). Heaven is "jamming" now but he's always in our hearts. It's his smile that I'll always remember. To Becky and his daughters, stay strong - our prayers are with you.

Mark will always be remembered as someone special. Good hearted to an extreme, fun-loving, reliable, curious, consistent, spiritual and always one to admire. His silent wit, humor and love for life remained through all the recent pain.

The best to the Schell family; Mark will be sorely missed as a friend, father, son, brother, uncle, husband and mentor. Our lives will be fuller in knowing Mark. He has left us all a template for living life to the fullest ...with his unmistakable hearty laugh. God speed my friend.

I have a memory of Mark that has stayed with me for 40 years. I was just 8 years old when my father died and I found out that I had been adopted. I was returning to school at St Stephen the Martyr a very sad, confused and frightened little girl. Mark was the first one to welcome me back to school. I have thought of him a lot over the years and I will always remember the kindness and compassion he showed in his quiet way even at that young age. I always knew that he was destined for greatness. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. It was truly an honor to have known Mark.

February 25, 2009

As an underclassman of Mark's while at Ready (we usually remember the cool upperclassmen) I remember a kind soul with a quick smile, a gentleman, and a mighty athlete (St. Stephen's had a good number of them)
A large votive candle burns for Mark at St. Barnabas, a little parish church here in Wisconsin. Prayers have been said and more will follow. Our love and support to the Schell family and all of Mark's loved ones. Thanks to Jesus, death is not the end and it cannot destroy the bonds of love forged by Him in our lives. May the light of Christ, alive and risen from the dead, adorn Mark Schell forever.

To the Schell family. I am sorry for your loss and my prayers are with Mark and all of you. I know Mark from JCU and Pacelli Hall. He was a great friend and an excellent example of a student athlete. I have fond memories of Mark from John Carroll and as a wrestling teamate. He always carried himself with a quite sense of class but with a mischevious sense of humor. I recall knowing its was spring on campus because you could here the music coming from Mark's corner room at Paccelli hall. I am not surpised Mark continued his committment to his wife, family, faith, community and to service. His illness and passing has impacted many and has reconnected old JCU friends. As one friend recenlty said "just the way Mark would have wanted it.
