Marvin Kantor Obituary

Kantor Marvin David Kantor, age 85, completed his life journey on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. He is survived by his wife and companion for 65 years, Sybil Gordon Kantor; children, Seth (Sue), Rebecca (Reed) Martin and Ali (Robyn); as well as five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In addition he is survived by cherished brothers, Harold (Cathy) and Charles (Lonnie). He had a very eclectic and successful business career working until 5 years ago. He was President of a Wall Street firm and then President of Curtis Publishing Company publisher of the Saturday Evening Post and Holiday magazine. Eschewing large corporations he spent the rest of his professional life building his own companies. He was most proud of the Wendt-Bristol Company, the first freestanding diagnostic imaging facility in Columbus. He built the first Alzheimer's home in Columbus as well as installed the first PET scanner. He loved overseas travel, good company, excellent food, fine wine, classical music and opera. He had a fierce desire for knowledge. He read prodigiously huge tomes of non-fiction, often a book a week. His apartment was stacked with books everywhere and there was always classical music in the background as he read The New York Times. He believed strongly in education. He was most proud of the higher education of his devoted wife Sybil, who went back to school to earn a BA and then PhD in Art History at the age of 65. She published an internationally recognized definitive work on Alfred Barr and the Intellectual Origins of the Museum of Modern Art. It was his fellowship in every sense of the word that sustained Sybil's years of hard work. The family will have a private memorial service in Boulder Colorado over Thanksgiving weekend. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Simmons College Making Education Work campaign online at https://alumnet.simmons.edu/giving. Condolences and memories can be sent to Sybil Kantor c/o Sunrise memory care unit 400 Summit Blvd., Broomfield, Colorado 80021.

I had the pleasure of working with Mr.Kantor and Wendt Bristol through the years upon returning to Columbus again was hired back. We had several long conversations on several subjects. On a few occasions out of the blue he would bring a bottle of wine, or insist I take 20.00 one thanksgiving to buy my husband a Ham... Very smart man who I learned alot from he would come visit often and had things he needed done and I was always willing to do help him out. Very Sad that his life ended but knowing Mr. Kantor it will be just another adventure, journey he will learn from I think his greatest rest was to be busy and always learning and looking for a new venture. Condolences to Mrs. Kantor I can't imagine life without her partner for so many years. Bless her

It was a great honor to have been in Marvin's presence over the years. He will be fondly remembered as a remarkable and adventurous man for whom no challenge was too great.

A dear man & a kind friend...Marvin Kantor. Every time we crossed paths he inquired after my well-being & my family. He didn't try to put on an "act" when it came to communicating with me as his employee---he genuinely wanted the best for me & cared about me. He always pushed me to go the extra mile & to never settle. I will miss his quirky sense of humor & his love for life. My thoughts & prayers go out to his family. May he be at peace.

To know Mr Marvin Kantor is to love him...his smile, personality, and wisdom. I truely value the opportunity to have known and worked for him. Mr Kantor was regarded for his compassion for people...giving a wheelchair to one in need upon leaving his building was just one story told shortly after I began emplyment. When he visited the center over the past few years it always made me smile and warmed my heart to see him. He is very much respected and soo sadly missed. My sincerest condolences.

MDK was a great man, entrepreneur, boss and friend! He gave me the opportunity to work for Wendt-Bristol 25 years ago and it built the foundation of my career. I have a heavy heart thinking of his passing; he and Mrs. K were very special to me. He always took interest in my life and shared in my sons academic/athletic successes. Blessing of peace and love to your family!
