Mary Florence Mankopf

Mankopf Ms. Mary Florence (Fortune) Mankopf, passed away peacefully at Westminster Thurber Retirement Community in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday evening, April 7, 2016, at the age of 97. Ms. Mankopf was born on September 9, 1918, in Eolia, Missouri, the third child of Ms. Ida Bell Pollard and Thomas Almond Fortune, Jr. After graduating from Eolia High School in 1936, she moved to Hannibal, Missouri, to live with her brother Marcellus. Mary was employed at the International Shoe Company in Hannibal for 27 years until the factory closed in 1963. On June 3, 1963 she married her longtime boyfriend, John H. Mankopf, a retired railroad worker also from Hannibal. After taking a year off from work, Ms Mankopf attended Nursing School sponsored by Levering Memorial Hospital and earned her license as a LPN in 1965. Mary was employed by Levering Memorial Hospital in the area of geriatric nursing until she retired in 1989, a period spanning 24 years. She was a devoted Christian and member of the Southside Christian Church where she taught Sunday school and subsequently the Oakwood Christian Church, both in Hannibal. Ms Mankopf moved to Columbus, Ohio in 2007 to be closer to relatives. She had been a resident at Westminster Thurber since 2009. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and her beloved husband. She leaves behind four nieces and nephews, Ms. Ann L. (Sutton) Pizzuti and Mr. Robert C. Sutton of Columbus, Ohio, Ms. Caroline (Fortune) Alexander of Memphis, Tennessee and Ms. Patricia (Fortune) Bell of Montana; 17 great and great-great nieces and nephews; and step-son, John H. Mankopf, Jr. of Montana. Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal, Missouri and she will be laid to rest at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal. The service will be officiated by Pastor Thomas Day of the Oakwood Christian Church. A memorial service will be held in Columbus, Ohio at Westminster Thurber Chapel on a date and time to be announced.
