Norbert George "Hans" Bruns

Bruns Norbert George "Hans" Bruns, age 94, of Columbus, OH, died May 6, 2016. He was born June 11, 1921 in Hamler, OH to the late Harmon and Marie Bruns. He is preceded in death by his stepmother Anna, his brothers Richard and Walden, and sister Olga Brenner. Norb is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Anna Mae; and their children, Linda (Dave) Carden, Jane (John) Porter, Kathy (Marty) Stalnaker, Steve (Jane) Bruns, and Scott Bruns. He also leaves behind 11 loving grandchildren, five sweet great-grandchildren; and his sister, Norma LaVigne. Norb was a WWII Veteran who served from 1943-46 as an Army clerk and chaplain's assistant in the 228th Station Hospital in Sherborne, England. His ability to speak German uniquely qualified him to assist with church services for German POWs. After working on the family farm, he pursued a career in the insurance industry. Starting out as a field agent in northwest OH, he concluded his career in management for both Motorists Insurance and Shelby Life. Always a people person with a quick wit and a knack for storytelling, his philosophy was, "If you find a job you love, you will never work another day in your life." He also served as a board member for the Hamler State Bank for over 45 years and was a member of the American Legion. Music was a life-long passion for Norb. His mother, a church organist, let him sit next to her on the bench as she played and taught him how to sing, though she died when he was only 6. He sang baritone in barbershop groups and church choirs for over 60 years. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling and sports, especially supporting his Buckeyes, Browns and Indians. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Upper Arlington Lutheran Church, 2300 Lytham Road. Family will receive friends at church an hour before the service. A reception will be held immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in memory of Norbert.
