Mrs. and Dr. Long were second parents to me in a time of personal tragedy and great change. I smile now as I recall walking through Bonnie Ridge, to shortcut through the Belcastros' back yard, and into the Longs'.

Mrs. Long was unfailingly positive and engaged. She fussed over her kids far more than I was accustomed to being fussed over. This warm and tender interactive style was a source of shared genuine and affectionate interplay between us. (I'd accuse her of worrying too much; she'd respond by worrying too much about my well-being!) She worried about Ed playing football, and said more than once, "Rick, I guess I'm just going to be one of those football mothers."

She and Dr. Long were remarkably generous and available to any of the Brown kids who drifted onto their property. Ed, Barb, and Jenny were classmates of myself, Tom, and Deb. We truly did "grow up together".

As I consider an earlier portion of her full life, what stands above all else is the consistent quality of her kindness. She was a "grown-up" who behaved like an adult, but who always took seriously the feelings of children. Would that we all could live our lives with such grace.

Barb, Ed and Rebecca, I was so sorry to hear of your loss. Your Mom was a wonderful lady who made everyone feel welcome in your home. She clearly loved having everyone around. I always remember times spent at your place fondly and Jean was a big part of that. Please know that my thoughts are with you.
