Nova Emmons Obituary

EMMONS Nova McKnight Emmons, long time Clintonville resident, passed away in her home of 69 years, Wednesday, May 4, 2011, just days before turning 102. Born on May 7, 1909, in Kensington, OH, the daughter of John and Anna (Harsh) McKnight, she graduated from Minerva High School in 1927, and Aultman Hospital School of Nursing in 1930. In 1932 she married her high school sweetheart Cecil L. Emmons, who died in 1974. They spent 42 wonderful years together; we celebrate that they are together again. Loyal daughter and wife, cherished mother and grandmother, she dedicated her life to the service of the Lord in gentleness and love, and had a long career as a private duty nurse. Nova lived independently, was generous, charming, and adored by all who met her. She collected cut glass and vintage jewelry, enjoyed needlepoint and bridge, and was an active member of the Indianola Church of Christ, Twig 50, Gillie and Upper Arlington Senior Centers, former charter member of Indianola CCL; Cancer Crew 31, and Salvation Army Auxillary Unit 13. In 2009, Nova was honored as the oldest living alumni of Aultman College. All who knew her felt the secret to her long and prosperous life was that she never complained, but met each day with joy. Faithful friends Kathleen Arkus, Betsy Eastlake, Betty Kruger and Vicki Lorms were an ever present influence of kindness until the end. Special thanks to cardiologists Dr. Dennis Bauman and Dr. Ernest Mazzaferri, Jr. for their long term heartfelt treatment. The tireless efforts of the caring, compassionate staff of HomeReach Hospice made her end days comfortable and were especially appreciated. Survived by devoted daughter, Patricia West of Bloomington, MN; granddaughter, Suzanne West of San Diego, CA; grandson, Christopher (Lisa) West; great grandsons, Tyson, Trenton, Roman, and Quenten of Prior Lake, MN. Also survived by cousins, Jayne Harsh, Charles (Loretta) Harsh and Eirdean Trachsel; Cecil's nieces and nephews, Larry (Alice) Emmons; David (Ruth) Emmons, Dan (Nancy) Emmons, Betty Emmons, Carolyn (Dr. Larry) Bennett, Melinda (Tom) Carter and Melissa Mooney (Philip Schultz). Visitation is Thursday, May 12 from 6-8 p.m. at SOUTHWICK-GOOD & FORTKAMP FUNERAL CHAPEL, 3100 N. High St., Columbus, 43202. Remembrance services will be held there Friday, May 13 at 1 p.m. She will rest peacefully next to her husband at Walnut Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Nova's name to Aultman College, Alumnae President, 2600 Sixth St. SW, Canton, OH 47710. Nova will be greatly missed and joyfully remembered by her loving family and friends. We treasure each day we had with her and are blessed to have known such an inspirational woman. A life that touches the hearts of other lives on forever. www.southwickfuneral.com

Our family always admired Nova's beautiful handwriting and she kept in touch after my mother died in Seattle in 2000. I wish I had a chance to speak to her but of course I never realized her age. Our sympathy to her family.

Dear Pat and family,

Thinking of you and wishing I was there to give you a little hug. I know how much your Mom meant to you and what a loss this is. What a wonderful woman and mother and grandma and great-grandma she was! I am privileged to have meet her (and to know her daughter so well.) Love you and take care and see you soon.

I will miss my dear Great Aunt Nova. I had the wonderful opportunity to get to know her as she shared many Christmas' with my family and much more. She impacted my life with her stories of life and her wonderful smile. One of my fondest memories is when my sister and I brought her lunch not to long ago and how she set her little kitchen table with the pretty china and cloth napkins and walking with her through the dining room to see all of the beautiful items she collected over the years. I will always have a special place in my heart for the beautiful smile and love she always gave me. Will miss her dearly. Love, Mary Ruth Emmons
