Paul Schroeder Obituary

Schroeder Paul Kenneth Schroeder, age 76, of Columbus, died Thursday, April 24, 2014 at his residence after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Born March 5, 1938 in Buffalo, NY to the late Kenneth and Alva (Schumacker) Schroeder, he was a 1955 graduate of McKinley High School in Buffalo, and later earned an Assoc. Degree in Business from CTI (Columbus State). He served 20 years and retired from the US Air Force with the rank of Tech Sergeant, serving his country in the Vietnam War. After his military service, he spent his professional career in Security Management, and retired from Ohio State University's Wexner Center for the Arts as a security supervisor in November, 2011. He had a passion for bowling, the Buffalo Bills and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He loved his country, and was a proud past member of local veterans organizations such as the VFW (Post 3426), the American Legion (Southway Post 144), and AmVets. More than anything, he loved his family. He married his wife Yoshie on November 21, 1966, and they spent 47 years together. He will be missed every day by all of us who loved him so much. Paul is also survived by his son, David Kenneth (Madge) Schroeder, Akron; daughter, Alice Elizabeth (Rory) Wickham, Hilliard; grandchildren, Austin Kenneth Schroeder, Reiley and Alana Wickham; and other extended family and friends. Visitation will be held 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 650 W. Waterloo St., Canal Winchester, where funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday. Interment with full military honors will follow at Franklin Hills Memory Gardens. Friends who wish may contribute to the DAV in his memory. Online condolences at spencefuneralhome.com

On a rainy day in a beautiful cemetery, next to a farm field I witnessed the burial of a colleague, friend, husband, father and veteran. He was sent off with prayers, warm thoughts and the Air Force Honor Guard. Paul was a guiding hand in the security profession and was deeply respected by those he served at The Ohio State University and the Wexner Center for the Arts. A survivor on multiple levels, from Vietnam to cancer, a true warrior. He was a mentor not only to the staff he supervised but to those he reported to as well. He displayed such a tough exterior, but his heart was always on display. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren and spoke of them often. He was proud of their accomplishments and was grateful to see their achievements. I am honored to have known and worked besides this man, thank you for sharing him with us.

Paul was always so kind to me and made time to ask how I was doing just about every time we saw each other at work. We'd usually chat for a bit and I always left his company feeling better than before. He had a special touch with people. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I have such fond memories of my encounters and discussions with Paul in the Wexner Center galleries over the years. He always had a warm greeting, a strong opinion, and, not least, a twinkle in his eye. He is missed.

Yoshi, David and Alice, Paul and I always had a special bond since I was a toddler. I spent so much time with Aunt Alva & Uncle Ken and Paul was more like my big brother than cousin. He always made me feel so special, taking me to the soda shop and for rides in his car. He would try to pass off that hard outer shell of a person like Uncle Ken but inside he was a softie..I will miss him as will you all. Keep the memories close to you and he will always be in your heart..God Bless you all and give you strength to take one day at a time..Love you all, "Sweetie"
