Richard DeWitt Obituary

DeWitt Richard L. "Rick" DeWitt, age 65, of Dublin passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2016 following a courageous 15 year battle against Parkinson's disease. He was born on March 19, 1951 in Delaware to the late Kenneth D. and Anne M. (Stalder) DeWitt. A graduate of Delaware Hayes High School in 1969, he was a member of the marching band and tennis team. Excelling in academics, he went on to graduate from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering ('73) and joined the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers, earning the highest grade in the state on the structural examination ('77). He graduated with a Master of Business Administration degree from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business, finishing first in his class ('85) and earning the Weidler Scholar award. A resident of Dublin for 23 years, he worked as a civil engineer with RS Fling and Partners from 1973 until 1985. He then joined URS Consultants, working in their Columbus and Atlanta offices from 1985 until 2003, most recently as Vice President, Director of Operations. Rick took great pride in his work and professionalism, a legacy which continues. He was a member of the Dublin Senior Golf League, volunteered for The Memorial Golf Tournament and served as a Columbus Rotarian. He also enjoyed playing softball, volleyball, scuba diving and playing Euchre with family and friends. Other than his cherished family, his primary passion was fishing, especially for Walleye on the waters of Lake Erie. Travel adventures to Hilton Head, Hawaii and Europe with his family will long be remembered. Strong, determined, and patient Rick always knew what to say and how to say it. He had a meticulous attention to detail and an enthusiasm to tackle any project. In addition to being kind and gentle, Rick was always quick witted and willing to share of his time for any endeavor. Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Linda (Mead); precious daughters, Laura (Dale) Sanko of Plain City, Kate (Adam) Drugan of Dublin; treasured grandchildren, Ellie, Ainsley, Molly, and Caden; brothers, Kenneth "Michael" (Kandy) DeWitt of Naperville, IL, Randy Lee (Marci) DeWitt of Delaware; nieces, and nephews. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 at SNYDER-RODMAN FUNERAL CENTER, 101 Valleyside Dr. (formerly 1510 W. William St.), Delaware, where services celebrating his life will follow at 4 p.m., with Rev. Elaine Klinger officiating. Time for fellowship and a meal will be provided following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, www.michaeljfox.org/tribute or P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014. To me, Rick was my mentor, leader, best friend and second father. His greatness was in his humility and humbleness. I will never forget his soft voice which impacted me more than loud ones. There are many lighthouses out there but Rick always stood out as the brightest of all. Missing him is cheap. Instead, he is with me every moment and for the rest of my life.
From me and my family whom he loved.
