Robert Horner Obituary

Horner, Jr, Robert
1932 - 2020
Robert William Horner, Jr, better known to close family and friends as Jack, left this world on Friday, December 18, 2020, to rest in comfort and peace with his Heavenly Father. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend of over 60 years, Jane (Foos) Horner from Bowling Green, Ohio; his sons, Robert William (Marilyn) and Timothy James (Elaine); eight grandchildren, Robert (Katie), Mary (Matthew), Margaret, Caroline, Thomas, Clara, Matthew and Annie; and many other family and close friends. He is predeceased by his sister, Margaret Sakel. Born and raised in Toledo, the son of Dr. Robert and Marguerite (Axford) Horner, he attended DeVilbiss High School and then the University of Toledo where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1955. He was a proud member of the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 and was stationed for a time in Japan. After his military service, he returned to marry Jane and to begin his long and distinguished civilian career. Following several years in pharmaceutical research, he attended the Butler University School of Pharmacy where he graduated in 1967, and was named a member of the Rho Chi Honor Society. Jack was a tireless and trusted worker throughout his life. He was admired by the many men and women that he led in the pharmaceutical manufacturing business. After a successful career, he retired from Roxane Laboratories (Columbus) in 1995. Following his retirement, he worked for many years as a pharmacist in the prison system. Jack was man of deep Christian faith and was always a dedicated patriot and family man. Early in his career he often held two jobs to support his young and growing family. He was a wonderful father who shared many adventures with his sons and passed along his passion for sports (especially his life-long love of the Cleveland Browns and Indians), business and politics. Virtually every day found Jack with a book in his hand or engaged in long discussions at the dinner table about pressing issues of the time. Jack was always a dedicated supporter of his church community. Whether working deep into the evening on the parish festival or making deliveries after work and on the weekends for the St. Vincent DePaul Society, St. Timothy Catholic Church and School knew they could count on Jack. A funeral mass will be held for Jack on Wednesday, December 23, at 10:30am at St. Andrew Catholic Church. Immediately following the mass, family members will attend a burial with military honors at Resurrection Cemetery. Arrangements by Egan-Ryan Funeral Home Northwest Chapel. Friends who may wish to contribute to his memory may donate to any organization engaged in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.

I had the pleasure of working with Bob for many years at Roxane Laboratories. He was a great supervisor and friend. I always talked to him about many things including baseball and my favorite team the Milwaukee Brewers. He also took the manufacturing department to a Columbus Clipper game once a year to show his appreciation for everyone’s hard work.
Bob obtained coats from his church for our foster children and also gave us money so the foster children could have a special Christmas. I will always remember his kindness and charitable attitude. There’s no doubt that I’ll be talking to him again in heaven someday. My prayers and condolences to his family who he loved so much.
