Robert Sybert Obituary

Sybert, Doctor Robert Albert
1929 - 2021
Doctor Robert Albert Sybert, a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend peacefully passed away surrounded by his children on July 5, 2021 at the age of 91 in Powell, Ohio. Robert "Bob" was born in Nanty-Glo, Pennsylvania to Fabian Joseph Sybert and Ellen Waldron Sybert. The oldest of four children, Bob attended Saint Mary's Catholic School and Nanty-Glo High School. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951, Bob joined the Army and was stationed in Germany from 1952-1954. Bob served in the Army motor pool while in Germany because of his ability to read and speak the language. He then got his first taste of medicine serving as a lab technician and working in a 1,000 bed hospital during his tenure in the Army. When he returned to the states Bob married Dorothy Marie Mashensic of Madera, Pennsylvania and the two of them headed off to Iowa. Bob enrolled in the Des Moines Medical School where he earned his degree as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. After graduation, Bob and Dorothy (Dottie) settled in Northeast Ohio, calling Ravenna, Ohio their home for more than 45 years. Early in his medical career, Bob was on the staff at Green Cross Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls, where he delivered over 3,000 babies, one of those just happened to be his youngest son. Bob was later on staff at Robinson Memorial Hospital and had a thriving medical practice in Ravenna, seeing upwards of 30 patients a day. While Bob's day was busy, he always made time to listen to his patients and give them his utmost care. His children hear stories and have fond memories shared with them by his patients and their families to this day. Bob was respected by the Ravenna community who supported him as he was elected and served as Portage County Coroner for 28 years. While Bob was managing his practice and coroner duties, his loving wife Dottie was busy raising their five children, Cheryl Sybert Ehrhorn (husband, Bill) of Franklin, Tennessee, Doctor Daryl Robert Sybert (wife, Deborah) of New Albany, Ohio, Curtis James Sybert Esq (wife, Karen) of Powell, Ohio, Denise Marie Gatts (husband, Dewey) of Powell, and Doctor David Allen Sybert of Columbus, Ohio. Bob and Dottie were loving parents who enjoyed time with their children. Many wonderful vacations to visit family in Nanty-Glo and to Myrtle Beach were enjoyed with Dottie's sister, Aunt Til and Uncle Jim alongside. Recollections of these special times together are always part of the conversation during family gatherings. Bob and Dottie relocated to Powell, Ohio in 2015 to be closer to their children, many of whom are in the Columbus area. Their love for each other was obvious as Bob cared for Dottie prior to her death in 2017. While Bob missed Dottie every day, he kept himself active by attending the gym, spending time with friends in the neighborhood, taking drives in Dottie's beautiful Lincoln, and of course spending time with his children. Bob enjoyed telling stories of his time on the family farm, at the family feed mill and also of his time in the Army. One of his favorite Army stories was when he worked late hours in the morgue and couldn't get to the dining hall before they closed, until the day he wheeled a gurney into the dining hall. The cook decided he would allow Bob extra time and from then on had a plate waiting for him! Bob and his stories will be greatly missed by his family. He was much loved by his children who are comforted that he is alongside his beloved Dottie. Besides his children, Bob leaves his brother, Doctor John Sybert (wife, Rosemary) of Colorado; and brother-in-law, John Mashensic (wife, Dorothy) of Elyria, Ohio. Bob leaves many grandchildren, Christen Elizabeth Steigerwalt (husband, Todd), Kellianne Marie Arias (husband, Miguel), HB Thompson, Kenzie A. Gardner (husband, Will) Austen N. Sybert, Oliver F. Sybert (wife, Melissa), Kiersten Nicole Sybert, Kelsey Marie Sybert, Dewey Robert Gatts, Cailin Marie Gatts, Coltin Jacob Gatts, Simon Reed Sybert, Celeste Elizabeth Sybert, Carly Catherine Sybert. He also leaves great grandchildren, Annie R. Gardner and James Robert Steigerwalt; and many nieces and nephews. Bob's sisters Faye Jerome and Darlene Sybert preceded him in death. Doctor Robert Sybert was a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, a member of the Rotary Club, Elks Club, and parishioner at Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna and later at Saint Joan of Arc in Powell, Ohio. I just found out about his death. He was the most caring Dr I ever had. He delivered me. Later in life he was my family Dr. He saved my life. I was really sick and had no insurance. He treated me for free. He was just a great man. Proud to have known him. My heart is with the entire family.

To all of Bob´s children I send my condolences on the loss of their father, Bob. He was not only my cousin, he was my God father and my dad was raised as his brother by my Aunt Ellen and Uncle Fabian. I would look forward to him and Dottie coming in for summer trips listening to his stories and teasing me by calling me my sister´s name! I will miss you Bobby! Rest In Peace!
