Stephen Cunningham Obituary

Gahanna - Stephen John Cunningham, age 73, of Gahanna, Ohio, died peacefully at his home on December 7, 2024 in the company of his loving family.

Steve is survived by his son, Bill Cunningham; daughter-in-law, Jaclyn Julow-Cunningham; grandsons, Stephen and Jack Cunningham, his twin sister, Sharon Thompson and her husband, Roy Thompson; sisters, Denise Harple, Sue Cunningham, and Debi Cunningham; nieces and nephews, Joe Moss, Jake Moss, Scott McLean, Carrie Barnes, John Morris, and Michelle Morris; and his dog, Chappy.

He was born on October 1, 1951, to Bill and Doris Cunningham. A 1970 graduate of Gahanna Lincoln High School, Steve went on to proudly serve in the United States Marine Corps for seven years. During his tenure, Steve was stationed in Quantico, Virginia, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, and Camp Pendleton, San Diego. As a Marine Corps Military Police officer, he ascended to the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

Upon returning to Gahanna after his service, Steve chose to follow in his father's footsteps, working as carpenter and contractor for nearly 48 years. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of construction and immersed himself completely in the craft of his work. He worked incredibly hard and felt a deep sense of commitment to his clients, his work, and the people he worked with.

Steve liked to discuss politics and had over 3,000 social media followers. If you had a minute to lend him your ear, he was likely to dive deep down the rabbit holes of our nation's political affairs. Typical for Steve, he generously donated his body to The Ohio State University College of Medicine for research. We are grateful for Dr. John Neff's knowledgeable and respectful partnership with Steve, and for Sharon's dedication and care over the past several months.

A celebration of Steve is scheduled at Flannigan's Pub, Blacklick, OH

I loved Steve for his kindness and love for his dogs. We talked for hours about politics-he was the most informed political person I have ever known. I loved Steve dearly.
