Steven Dietrich Obituary

Dietrich, Steven
Steven R. Dietrich, AIA, age 58, left his family peacefully on Saturday, August 19, 2017 after a two-and-a-half-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife, Polly Dennett Dietrich; his children, Paige Boley, Owen Dietrich, and Mason Dietrich; his parents, Frederick Dietrich and Mary Dietrich; and his siblings, David Dietrich, Susan Vasko, Ann Kozma, and Philip Dietrich. He loved God and his beautiful creation, photography, traveling, drawing and painting, music, playing guitar, singing, hospitality, and Jessie – his energetic dog. He was a passionate architect, and he used his career to build up his church in the Middle East. For the last decade, he practiced architecture in Iraq, Qatar, and UAE. He worked on numerous hospitals and clinics but was never a patient in until April 2015 when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was a very compassionate man and became even more so with his diagnosis. He loved his family and missed them while working abroad. He was surrounded by his family during the last months of his life. He enjoyed phone calls, visits, and family get-togethers. The family is so grateful for their time with him. He is dearly loved and missed. Steve was born in Bryan, Ohio on June 9, 1959 and grew up in Sylvania, Ohio. He graduated in 1985 from Ohio State with a Bachelor of Science followed by a Bachelor of Architecture from Catholic University of America in 1990. He worked initially in Washington, DC helping with the design of the Korean War Memorial. Steve moved back to Columbus and joined URS/Greiner eventually taking a job in the Green Zone in Iraq assisting in health care design. Steve was head of architecture at Obermeyer in UAE, working on the design of large medical facilities. Family and friends are invited to a potluck at the Park of Roses on Friday, August 25 at 6 p.m. followed by a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to pancan.org to provide continued support for pancreatic cancer research

Steve and I worked together on the Sidra project, in Doha. He was a very decent and kind person, with a fine, understated humor. I considered him a friend as well as a colleague. I am just seeing the news now, and sending my belated condolences and best wishes for his family, who he spoke of often.

Dear Polly, Paige, Owen, Mason; Uncle Fred, and Aunt Mary; Cousin's Dave, Sue, Ann, and Phil; and all who loved Steve,

Many years have passed since I've seen my cousin Steve, but I have many fond memories, and over the years, I've heard many impressive stories of his life. Using his God given skills to benefit others is exemplary. I am heartened at your loss - He was a man of truth and unselfish goodness.

There is a well known quote from an unknown author that suggests that the measure of a man is not how did he die, but how did he live, not what did he gain, but what did he give.

By this measure, Steve's life was not only true and laudable, but it gave glory God.

On behalf of my wife Lori, my daughter Marielle, and my son Austin, we extend our love and most sincere condolences to all of you.

I always considered Steve as one of my Spiritual Dads. I remember meeting him when he was moving back from DC to OH. The excitement and the way he talked about his family especially his wife always moved me. He would ask about you and really listen, giving spiritual insight and perspective... often time a little humor and a smile. He will be missed! My prayers go out to the family!

I always considered Steve one of my Spiritual Dads. I remember first meeting him when he was moving his family back to Ohio from Washington DC. The way he shared about his family and especially his wife always moved me. He'd ask about me and my life and really listen and give great answers to questions and spiritual insight and perspective. He will be missed! My prayers go out to the family!

Cancer does many things to us as we battle it, but as the poem says, "Cancer is so limited that it cannot cripple love, cannot shatter hope, cannot corrode faith, cannot eat away peace, cannot destroy confidence, cannot kill friendships, cannot shut out memories, cannot silence courage, cannot invade the soul, cannot reduce Eternal Life, cannot quench the Spirit and it cannot destroy the Power of the Resurrection." Steve,You have fought the fight and finished the race...and have won the crown. Our hearts and prayers are with you Polly and children. We love you dearly!
