Susan Vagnier Obituary

Vagnier, Susan
1958 - 2021
Susan Lynne (Einsel) Vagnier (Our Beloved Sue), aged 62, Westerville, Ohio, was welcomed into heaven with open arms by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 11, 2021. "Well done, good and faithful servant…Come and share your Master's happiness!" (Matthew 25:23). Sue's life was characterized by service to others. She served her country as a medical doctor in the United States Army in the European theater during the historic times of German Reunification and the First Persian Gulf War. She was stationed at Landstuhl Army Regional Medical Center where she rose to the rank of major. The motto of the hospital was "Not for Self but for Others", which perfectly described Sue's life! She served her community as a beloved Ob/Gyn physician in private practice for over 25 years at St Ann's Hospital and Riverside Methodist Hospital. She helped to lovingly welcome thousands of newborns into the world throughout her career. She served on the Ohio Health Vax Team as a volunteer during the current COVID pandemic vaccinating and educating many people. She did this while employed at Dublin Methodist Hospital as a house physician in Women's Health. She served her neighborhood by organizing an online support group during the ongoing pandemic, knitting together the community and fostering kindness among neighbors. She served in her church, Vineyard Church of Columbus as a keyboard player on the worship team, as a small group leader, and in various roles in international missions. She also served at a mission hospital in an underserved area in the Sindh province of Pakistan. She was such a blessing to our family, always advocating for us and making us feel special whether it was through thoughtful gifts on our birthdays, timely advise, or planning a fun family event. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege to know her, love her, and work with her. She is survived by her devoted husband of over 36 years, James A. Vagnier; her two daughters, Janelle (Steve) Dethloff and Renae (Matthew) Bumpus; three grandsons, Aquila Bumpus, Zebedee Bumpus, and Quinn Dethloff; her sister, Mary (Brian) Kost; nephew, Brian Jr (Danielle) Kost; and her niece, Julia (Michael) Thomas. She was preceded in death by her father Major General David W. Einsel, Jr. and her mother Elva Y. (Aylor) Einsel. A celebration of Sue's life will be held on Friday, July 23 from 4-7PM at Vineyard Church, 6000 Cooper Rd, Westerville, OH in the multipurpose room. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Fistula Foundation, https://fistulafoundation.org/donate. To send a message of sympathy to the family, please visit:

I only learned recently that Due had died. I first knew of Sue when I was a plus-one at Sue and Jim's wedding. Later I got to know Sue, and then she also became my gynaecologist. She was such a delightful person, always full of missions news and interested in asking about my kids and telling me about hers. I am so sorry for your loss.

Dr. Sue brightened up many days at Mt. Carmel St Ann´s labor & delivery floor. As a young nurse, I quickly came to respect and appreciate her skill in the delivery room, but always her smile and laughter as she charted at the nurses station or waited for lab results to come back. She checked in on each of us, asking about our kids, cheering my husband on through his residency training, encouraging a patient in a difficult moment. I knew I could ask her any question and she would respond with a smile and a great plan of care - a woman who taught me a lot clinically and also personally. It was a coincidence that she also was a friend and neighbor to my Aunt & Uncle over many years. What fun to see her on Winmar Place when we came back from the West Coast to visit - same sweet lady. She led a remarkable life, truly a blessing to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed!

As one of Susan´s cousins, what I best remember about Sue since childhood were the happy twinkle in her eyes, the knowingness of her smile, the intelligence in the way she looked at you, her reverence for her parents, home and God, her openness to family and kindness to everyone. She was truly unique in the way she gave of herself and will be fondly missed by all who knew her. Rest in Peace and joy, dear cousin.

Jim, Janelle, Renae and family,

Sue was such a blessing to our family. I'll always remember her kind smile and sharing funny stories at our Vagnier family get togethers. We were so fortunate to have Sue deliver Bethany into the world when she was at Riverside during her residency. She will be truly missed, but I know we have another angel in heaven. Love and prayers, Janet and Charly

She delivered 2 of my babies. I have never had a doctor pray with me and be so kind to me. She came in after an infant loss to see me, and sat next to me, held my hand, and prayed. I will never ever forget that day and what she did. Welcome home, good and faithful servant indeed.
