Thomas Applegate Obituary
Thomas W. Applegate, Jr., died February 4, 2018 at the age of 66. He was born on September 20, 1951 to the late Vivian (White) and Thomas Applegate. Tom graduated from Bishop Ready High School and attended Xavier University, Otterbein College and The Ohio State University. While working security at the construction of what was to be a nuclear power plant in Moscow, Ohio in the early 1980's, Tom was a "whistleblower" to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, exposing defects in construction that ultimately resulted in the project's cancellation. Tom was a talented singer in his younger years, the star of numerous high school musicals. Despite his own life long battle with mental illness, Tom was a tireless advocate for others suffering from mental health issues. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his uncle Msgr. Bennett Applegate, and nephew Andrew. Survived by siblings, Patricia (Lou), Barbara, Peggy (Robert), Theresa, Martha, Susan (Brian), Ben (Sheila), Mary (Ed); and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 9-10 a.m. at EGAN-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 403 E. BROAD ST. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. at Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel, 6440 S. High St. with interment following at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the National Alliance on Mental Illness or the Andrew Applegate Foundation (1250 S. Michigan Ave., #2802, Chicago, IL 60605).

I knew Tommy from Holy Family Grade School, he was always the class clown, and a sweet boy. I was very proud that he came forward about the problems at the nuclear plant. My prayers to his family and friends.

I was blessed to have known him, if only for a short while. It was great hearing stories about his life, and talking about what it was like for him going through what he did. As far as I'm concerned, the man was a hero.

To the Applegate Family,
I am so sorry for your loss, and also the loss of another classmate. I remember running into him a few times, and talking to him at our last class reunion. I also remember asking him if he would like me to take him to the Columbus Italian Festival. It was nice to see him and see him enjoy having some fun. I will remember him singing, and his wonderful smile. R I P Tom you will be missed.

I hold many fond memories of time spend with Tom. Remembering his first day at Bishop Ready brings a smile and warms my heart. Junior year my date and I doubled with Tom and his date to the prom. Remember it like yesterday. Tom was a good man. So very sorry for your families loss. May he rest in peace. Prayers for all who knew and loved him.
